The Name On It

You will say it out loud, which is more than most people manage: a good share of what you spend goes to the name, and the name works. It gets read across a table in four seconds, it holds its number at resale, it means a jacket bought in one city is legible in another. That is a real service and you are paying a real price for it, knowingly.

What you are renting is a consensus, and a consensus belongs to somebody else. The house can put its name on a lower grade of leather, licence the eyewear to a company you have never heard of, run the same monogram down onto a keychain, and the value you bought moves without asking you. Anyone who watched every large luxury site fold or get sold for scrap between 2023 and 2026 knows what a name proves about a balance sheet. It protects the resale, usually. It never protected the goods.

Buy the name with your eyes open, then check the stitch anyway.
