What you want is a stretch of about a decade, ending the year Helmut Lang walked away from the label with his name on it, and what you actually want inside that decade is the cloth. Bonded nylon cut like tailoring. A parka and a suit jacket built out of the same shell. Hardware where a button should be, and raw denim with the seams taped flat so the leg reads as one surface instead of four panels.

The part you will not enjoy: the name stayed on the label after he left it, so a large share of what gets sold to you as archive was cut by people he never met, in years he had nothing to do with. Half your hunt is authentication rather than taste. You have spent evenings comparing zipper pulls that you would not describe out loud to anybody you work with.

Say plainly what it was solving. Clothes for a hard city at speed, made from fabric that had only ever belonged to something else. That argument won so completely that a good technical shell in a shop today does the 1999 job, dry, in your size, for a quarter of what a real one costs. Buy the current shell. Keep hunting the jeans.
