your read · Which city are you actually dressing for?
Los Angeles Evening
You dress for eleven at night in a city that is warm at four.
Your day has two climates and only one of them makes the forecast. Twenty six degrees on a patio at lunch, then the sun drops behind the hills and takes eleven degrees with it in forty minutes, and you are standing outside a restaurant in Highland Park doing arithmetic. The car is your coat closet, your umbrella and your lobby.
What you will not want to hear: the car has let you get away with owning almost no outerwear, and it shows the moment you leave the county. You have excellent shirts and a knitwear drawer with one honest thing in it. Cold is a skill, and you have not practised.
Buy for eleven at night, not for two in the afternoon.
What you'd actually buy
- A boxy cashmere crewneck in oatmeal, heavy enough to be the outer layer
- An unlined suede jacket that lives on the back seat by choice
- Wide cotton trousers with one soft break at the ankle
- Acetate sunglasses in a colour, since everyone else brought black
