How to clean suede shoes without ruining them

Suede forgives dirt and punishes panic. Start dry, use less than you think, and let it dry slowly.

What suede is, and why it marks

Suede is leather from the underside of the skin, mostly lamb, goat or calf, sanded into a soft nap. Those raised fibres hold dust and flatten where they are rubbed, so most marks on suede are crushed nap and surface dirt, not stains. A brush fixes most of them. Water is the thing that leaves a ring.

The steps, in order

StepWhat to doWhy
1. Dry itIf the shoes are wet or muddy, let them dry completely firstWet mud smears into the nap; dry mud brushes off
2. BrushA suede brush, back and forth, light pressureLoosens surface dirt
3. EraseRub a suede eraser over marks and scuffsLifts the nap and the dirt caught in it
4. Brush againBrush away the eraser crumbsRaises the nap so the colour evens out
5. Foam, only if neededFoam on a soft brush, small circles, then wipe off all of itLeftover cleaner dries as a ring
6. Dry slowlyRoom temperature, away from heat and sunHeat stiffens suede and can crack it
7. ProtectA breathable repellent on clean, dry suedeWater and dirt bead off next time

What never to do

  • Soak suede, or put it in a washing machine.
  • Scrub hard or use a stiff brush on the nap.
  • Dry it with a hair dryer, a radiator or direct sun.
  • Try a wet step on dyed suede without testing a hidden spot first. Dyed suede can bleed.

Salt and slush

Road salt dries into a white tide line, and on suede the fix is the same patience: let the shoe dry, brush, then clean lightly. Our note on salt and winter boots covers the season, and the leather grades guide explains why smooth leather and suede take different care.

What a suede kit costs

On 5 November 2026 Utopia stocked the Jason Markk Premium Suede Cleaning Kit, a brush and an eraser, at CAD 22. That is the whole dry routine above in one box.

Common questions

Can you clean suede with water?
Only as a last step, and lightly. Start dry with a brush and a suede eraser. If you need more, put a little foam cleaner on a soft brush, wipe every bit of it off, and let the shoe air dry. Never soak suede or put it in a washing machine.
How do you dry suede shoes that got wet?
Blot them, stuff them with paper, and let them dry at room temperature away from heaters, hair dryers and direct sun. Once they are fully dry, brush the nap back up.
What is the difference between suede and nubuck?
Suede is the inner, flesh side of the skin, sanded to a nap. Nubuck is the outer, grain side, buffed to a shorter, finer nap. Both clean the same way: dry first, gently.
Should you protect suede before wearing it?
Yes. A breathable repellent spray on clean, dry suede makes water and dirt bead off. Reapply when water stops beading.
