Capsule wardrobe: the list for women and men

Fewer clothes, and every one of them goes with the rest. The idea is fifty years old; the arithmetic still works.

The arithmetic

Four tops that each go with three bottoms make twelve outfits. Add two jackets that go over all of them and you have thirty six. That only works if the colours agree, so start there: two or three base colours and one accent. Navy, grey and cream is the easiest set to buy for.

How to build one without starting over

  • Lay out the clothes you wear the most. They tell you your base colours.
  • Fill the gaps first: a coat, a jacket or trousers that go with everything.
  • Buy fit before fabric before brand. A tailor can fix a hem; nobody can fix a shoulder.
  • Count outfits, not items. If a new shirt goes with fewer than three things you own, skip it.
  • Revisit each season. Project 333 resets every three months for that reason.

Fewer clothes means each one is worn harder, so fibre and fit matter more. Read the wool guide before the coat and the knits, and what a tailor can change before the blazer.

Common questions

How many items are in a capsule wardrobe?
There is no fixed number. Susie Faux revived the term in the 1970s. Her minimum was two pairs of trousers, a dress or skirt, a jacket, a coat, a knit, two pairs of shoes and two bags. Project 333 sets 33 items, shoes and jewellery included, for three months.
Who invented the capsule wardrobe?
The term appeared in American publications as early as the 1940s. Susie Faux, owner of the London boutique Wardrobe, revived it in the 1970s, and Donna Karan made it famous in 1985 with a collection of seven interchangeable items.
What colours work for a capsule wardrobe?
Two or three base colours that all go together, such as navy, grey and cream, or black, camel and white, plus one accent. If every top goes with every bottom, the count of outfits multiplies.
Is a capsule wardrobe different for men?
Only in the items. The rule is the same: few things, all of which work together. A men's capsule leans on a navy jacket, grey trousers, dark jeans, white shirts and one good coat.
