Save the organiser's notice with the year visible. The dates, hours and admission above come from the current page, and the organiser's page does not print a vendor list, so a poster from a previous edition cannot tell you who is exhibiting this time.

Use the vendor list to choose your first stops once the organiser publishes it. A denim search needs a different list from a search for evening dresses. Give yourself one main purchase and a second category to browse if the first comes to nothing.

Write your total budget before buying a ticket. Include travel and the $17 admission as separate costs, then keep a fixed amount for clothes. Spending that amount on one piece is a choice; raising it because you have already paid to attend is a different one.

Check the garment before paying

Bring the measurements of something you already wear comfortably. For trousers, note the waist, rise and inseam. With a jacket, compare the shoulder and sleeve measurements as well as the chest.

Inspect the garment in the best light available. Open the lining, look at the seams and work each fastening without forcing it. Ask the seller to point out repairs and any damage before you settle on a price.

Keep the cost of alterations separate from the asking price. Ask a tailor about work you cannot assess yourself before treating it as a small fix. Leave the piece if the fit depends on a repair you have not priced.

Read the seller's return terms before paying and save the receipt. Get any statement about fabric, maker or repairs in writing if it affects your decision. A clear record helps you remember what the seller actually said.
