Tremaine Emory and why the cotton wreath matters
Tremaine Emory started Denim Tears in 2019. The debut collection arrived that summer, on the 400th anniversary of the first slave ship reaching Virginia in 1619. It examined the history of cotton and slavery in America, printing wreaths on jeans, hoodies and sweatshirts.
To Emory, the cotton wreath stands for the African American experience. The note on what Denim Tears means explains the history behind that imagery. In January 2020, a capsule with Levi's followed with 501 jeans.
Emory served as Supreme's first creative director from February 2022 to August 2023. In December 2025, Denim Tears released its first full denim line of its own after years of making jeans with Levi's.
