Duty from the US to Canada on clothes, shoes and bags
A piece made in the US and bought from a US shop pays no Canadian duty under CUSMA, but since 8 September 2026 listed US made clothing pays a 50 per cent surtax, even on small parcels. Anything made elsewhere pays full duty above CAD $150 by courier, 18 per cent on a wool coat, plus GST or HST.
Type the price and what it is. The page works out the duty, the US surtax, your province's tax and the carrier's fee from the rules in force today.

Since 8 September 2026 Canada adds 50 per cent to some clothing made in the US, under the United States Surtax Order (2026). The list covers cotton T-shirts and hoodies, polyester or nylon sweaters, coats and jackets, men's wool suits, blazers and trousers, and polyester or silk dresses. It applies even below the CAD $20, $40 and $150 lines and to US made pieces shipped from anywhere, but not to shoes, bags, jewellery or watches. GST or HST is charged on it too.

Women's leather shoes are 11 per cent only when they cost CAD $30 or more a pair. Below that they are 18.
Goods released by a courier in one province but sent to another may pay only GST at the border. The CBSA says the rest is then owed to your own province.

Common questions
How much is duty from the US to Canada?
Nothing on a piece made in the US and bought there, under CUSMA, unless it is on the surtax list. A piece made elsewhere pays full duty above CAD $150 by courier: 18 per cent on a wool coat, 10 on a leather handbag. GST or HST comes on top above CAD $40.
Source: Canada Border Services Agency (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca, 3 pages), read 20 October 2026.
Are there tariffs on US clothing in Canada?
Yes, a 50 per cent surtax since 8 September 2026 on listed US made clothing: cotton T-shirts and hoodies, polyester or nylon sweaters, coats and jackets, men's wool suits, blazers and trousers, and polyester or silk dresses. Shoes, bags and jewellery made in the US are not on it.
Sources: Department of Finance Canada (canada.ca), read 20 October 2026 and Canada Border Services Agency (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca), read 20 October 2026.
Is there duty on items under $150 from the US?
By courier from the US, no duty up to CAD $150 and no tax up to $40. The 50 per cent surtax on listed US made clothing still applies under those lines.
Source: Canada Border Services Agency (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca, 2 pages), read 20 October 2026.
Does a piece made in the US but bought elsewhere pay the surtax?
Yes. The surtax follows where a piece was made, so a US made hoodie sent from a shop in the UK pays it too, and it misses the CUSMA rate, which needs the piece bought in the US or Mexico.
