Common questions

Do I pay GST on imported goods under $1,000?

Yes, above CAD $40 by courier from the US or Mexico and above CAD $20 otherwise, you pay 5 per cent GST or your province's HST. It is charged on the price plus any duty. Under $1,000 only the duty can drop away: a courier parcel from the US or Mexico pays no duty up to $150.

Is there an import fee for Canada?

The CBSA charges no fee of its own, but Canada Post adds $9.95 when duty or tax is owed. FedEx charges 2.5 per cent of the duty and tax it pays for you, at least CAD $10. UPS, DHL and Purolator set their own fees.

How much import duty do you pay in Canada?

Most clothing pays 17 or 18 per cent under the 2026 Customs Tariff. Leather shoes pay 11 or 18 per cent, handbags 10, wallets 8.5, gold jewellery 6.5 and watches 5. Pieces made and bought in a free trade partner, such as the US, the EU, the UK, Japan or Korea, pay none.

How much is import duty on goods from the USA?

A piece made in the US and bought there pays no duty under CUSMA. Since 8 September 2026, though, listed US made clothing pays a 50 per cent surtax. An Italian coat bought in New York pays the full rate above CAD $150 by courier, 18 per cent for wool.

How do I calculate import duty for Canada?

Multiply the price, without shipping, by the duty rate, then add GST or HST on the price plus the duty. For a CAD $1,000 Italian wool coat bought in the US, that is $180 duty at 18 per cent. Ontario HST of 13 per cent on $1,180 then adds $153.40.

Do I have to pay tariffs if I order something from the US?

The extra tariff hits only US made pieces on Canada's counter tariff list: 50 per cent on listed clothing since 8 September 2026, even on small parcels. Shoes, bags, jewellery and watches made in the US are not on it. Normal duty is a separate question: a piece made outside North America pays it above CAD $150 by courier, or above $20 by post.
