Layer one: matte cotton

Y-3, the line adidas and Yohji Yamamoto founded in 2002, makes a boxy tee in black cotton jersey, CAD 165 at Due West. It is the flattest black on this list, which is why it goes underneath.

Layer two: wool and a weave

Layer three: a pleat, a shine or a tailored line

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake's basic pleated jacket is polyester, pleated so it does not crease, CAD 1,300. The pleats throw thin lines of shadow across the black, which is texture you can see from the street.
