Arc'teryx resale: shells at 75% of new, trade in for 30%

In 2021, TikTok's ritual for a new Arc'teryx jacket was the shower test: take it in, and watch the water bead off. The soundtrack was a song called "Arc'teryx" by YT ("Arc'teryx on me, we don't rock no Patagonia"). Today the brand buys those jackets back and resells them through ReBird, its own program.

Most used shells there ask 75 percent of the original price, and a trade in pays 30 percent in store credit. A used men's Alpha SV earns up to $330 in credit, then sells for $825 on the resale shop, against $1,150 new.

Buy used from Arc'teryx itself, for the warranty more than the price. Its warranty covers only the original buyer of a jacket, with one exception: the gear it resells.

Buying used, and why the brand's shop wins

The warranty decides this. In force since November 2022, it covers apparel for its practical lifespan, but only for the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer.

It also names what it leaves out: third party auction sites, and unauthorized dealers selling through third party marketplaces. A jacket from a stranger, however clean, comes with no brand cover at all.

The resale shop is the exception. Every piece there is "authenticated, repaired, and refreshed," and all of it stays under the warranty for its practical lifespan. Its 21 men's Beta AR listings run $473 to $630, against $840 for a new one.

Selling it, and what 30 percent buys

The trade in is simple, and it is not generous. Arc'teryx pays 30 percent of the original retail price as a gift card, so an Alpha SV earns up to $330 and a Beta AR up to $225.

Acceptance comes down to one line of plain English: "If you'd give it to a friend, we'll likely accept it." Clean gear goes in at a store or by mail, and some categories are refused.

Do the sum before you box it: any private sale above the credit, in cash, beats a card you can only spend at Arc'teryx. What the Canada Goose trade in pays is the same trade, a coat for a gift card.

What holds its value

The brand's own price tags answer this. Most shells ask 75 percent of new and synthetic insulation like the Atom asks 70. Some down drops to 55, like a men's Sorin at $990 against $1,800.

Read the cloth and the prices make sense. The Alpha SV is deliberately heavy for a shell: 100 denier, three layer GORE-TEX PRO ePE in a 135 gsm plain weave, 492 grams in all. The Beta AR is the edit of that idea, with 100 denier only across the upper yoke, where the abrasion is, and 80 denier in the body, for 460 grams.

Arc'teryx says it led the development of that ePE membrane as GORE-TEX's leading partner: "a stronger, thinner membrane with maximum durability." The used prices read like a vote of confidence in it. Even the Atom, lighter work with Coreloft 60 under a 20 denier ripstop at 320 grams, still asks 70 percent.

Where to do it in person

ReBird counters do most of the work on the spot. Ste-Catherine in Montreal, Bloor Street in Toronto and SoHo in New York sell resale gear in store. Service centres such as Kitsilano in Vancouver and Banff take repairs with no appointment.

A wash gives GORE-TEX its water repellency back and puts the loft back in down. Repairs done in store happen while you wait. Bigger ones take 3 to 5 business days to assess and 2 to 5 weeks to fix, and most are covered by the warranty.

Before you pay a stranger

Assume no warranty, then price it that way. With the brand asking 75 percent for a checked, covered shell, a stranger's jacket should cost clearly less.

Check that the letters match the coat, because an AR sold as an SV is a different jacket. Then run a smaller shower test: water on the shoulders should bead and roll off.

If it soaks in, the jacket is not finished. Arc'teryx says an ePE face fabric can wet out early without the membrane leaking, and a wash and a dry bring the finish back. Buy or trade before the first cold week, when everyone wants the same shell.

No, Arc'teryx covers apparel for its practical product lifespan, which its own warranty says does not mean your lifetime. Footwear gets 1 year and climbing gear 2 years, and only the original buyer is covered, unless the piece came from the brand's resale shop.

Sell Arc'teryx back to the brand through ReBird for 30 percent of the original price in store credit, or sell it privately for cash. The trade in takes clean gear in great condition at a store or by mail, in Canada and the US only.
