Fill power measures loft, not warmth

The International Down and Feather Bureau says it on its own page, read 20 September 2026. Fill power "measures the amount of space a specific weight of down occupies".

So 800 fill traps more air per gram than 600 fill. It does not follow that the coat is warmer. The weight of down inside is a second number, and most brands do not print it.

There is a gap here worth knowing. The IDFB says it does not set labelling standards and does not publish its test method.

No public ASTM method for fill power exists either. Ask for the fill power and the fill weight together.

What a warmth rating is worth

Canada Goose publishes a five point scale, the Thermal Experience Index, read 20 September 2026. Level 1 is rated 5C to -5C. Level 2 runs 0C to -15C, level 3 runs -10C to -20C, level 4 runs -15C to -25C.

Level 5 is rated -30C and below. Canada Goose says those parkas are informed by "people who work and live in the coldest places on Earth".

Read it as a house scale. The page names no test method and no standard. We tried to check whether Moncler publishes anything comparable and could not: moncler.com refused every automated read on the day.

What RDS actually certifies

The current version is RDS 3.0, effective 1 July 2019, from Textile Exchange. It covers animal welfare in the duck and goose supply chain, plus the chain of custody from farm to finished product.

Live plucking is prohibited. So is force feeding. Audits are annual and done by independent third parties.

Two limits are written in. A product qualifies at 5 per cent RDS material, measured against its down content. Recycled down and down from wild birds cannot be certified at all.

Canada Goose says 100 per cent of the down in its Canadian manufacturing is RDS certified, from its own sustainability page read 20 September 2026.

What the wool words mean

Woolmark runs three tiers, and all three specifications took effect 1 July 2026. Woolmark alone means pure new wool, with up to 5 per cent other fibre for decoration.

Woolmark Blend means at least 50 per cent new wool. Wool Blend means 30 to 50 per cent. The test method is called TM155, with a 3 per cent tolerance.

A rating is the brand's claim. Fill power is a measurement. They are not the same kind of number.

What 43 coats ask in Toronto

Counted 20 September 2026: 43 women's coats and jackets, CAD 349 to CAD 3,200, median CAD 1,182.

Ten are wool coats, CAD 479 to CAD 3,150, median CAD 1,550. Six are bombers, median CAD 1,099. Two are trench coats at CAD 2,050, and one is a pre owned Canada Goose Kensington Parka at CAD 400.

The dearest two were both RUOHAN: a Loess cocoon jacket at CAD 3,200 and an Umber Raas coat at CAD 3,150. The cheapest was a Toga Pulla hooded jacket at CAD 349.

Before you pay

Ask three questions and get the answers in writing. The fill power and the fill weight, then whether the down is RDS certified, then the exact wool percentage.
