Canada Goose and Nobis, on the shelf.
In 1982 Laurie Skreslet became the first Canadian on top of Everest in a custom parka from Metro Sportswear, the company that became Canada Goose. That design returned in 2011 as the Skreslet Parka, rated TEI 5, and one hangs at Due West in size L for CAD 995, down from CAD 1,250. It comes in Summit Pink now.
Buy the rating for the coldest hour you stand still in, and compare numbers inside one brand rather than across brands. A level 4 at Canada Goose stops at minus 25°C, while a Level 4 at Moose Knuckles reaches minus 30°C. Same word, different cold.

For standing still at minus 30
The Expedition was developed in the 1980s for scientists working at Antarctica's McMurdo Station, where it earned the nickname Big Red. Canada Goose notes that its performance is proven at the South Pole each year by the National Science Foundation division of Polar Research. White duck down of 625 fill power insulates its relaxed mid thigh shell.

Built for an Everest ascent, the Skreslet uses 750 fill power down, a fully seam sealed hip length cut and an inner mesh pocket made to hold a water bottle. Nobis built the Supra for deep cold as a shorter puffer, pairing a seam sealed waterproof and breathable membrane with a fixed hood. Both reach minus 30°C by their makers.
For a city winter
Eran Elfassy founded Mackage in 1999, and Elisa Dahan joined two years later. Their Riley jacket pairs a relaxed fit with a removable shearling bib and hood, using 90 percent duck down for minus 20°C days. For minus 25°C cold, the Sullivan steps up with a Nordic Tech weave and 800 fill power traceable duck down in a mid length cut.
Canada Goose's level 4 stops at minus 25°C; Moose Knuckles' Level 4 runs to minus 30°C.
Moose Knuckles rates its Original 3Q to minus 30°C, packing 800 fill power RDS certified down into a shell with a removable shearling trimmed hood. Its down filled collar guards against drafts. Beside it, Canada Goose cuts the Carson in a slim, mid thigh profile with 625 fill power down for days down to minus 25°C.

For wet snow and less money
Descente's ALLTERRAIN collection launched in 2012, growing out of the Mizusawa Down range. Its Shuttle Parka sheds wet sleet with a shell waterproof to 20,000 mm, tightening across the chest with a Boa dial. (If you walk through wet sleet rather than dry snow, that waterproof shell is the one to pull on first.)
Montreal label KANUK has made coats in Canada since 1974, filling the Misto with Canadian white Hutterite duck down. Its Misto is marked down to CAD 685 from CAD 990 for minus 25°C cold, while the Hugo sits at CAD 615 for minus 20°C. Both deliver 800 fill power insulation for less money.

Canada Goose notes on its own site that the Expedition runs large. Size down. Most of the ten jackets hang in only one or two sizes at Due West at 431 Queen Street West in Toronto.
The boutique accepts returns within 30 days on unworn regular stock, but sale items cannot be refunded. Sale pieces are final. Due West ships to the US, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and does not cover duties or taxes on those orders.
At the Bank of Canada's exchange rate, an American buyer pays about USD 1,223 for the Expedition and USD 978 for the 3Q before shipping and any duty. duty on clothes into the US explains the duty, and Due West says a coat with fur may be inspected at the border, which may cause a delay. within stocks no Patagonia and no Fjällräven pieces, so anyone after an alpine hiking jacket will need to look elsewhere.
