Canadian clothing brands, bought for the job, not the logo

Canadian label OVO, founded by Drake and a collective in 2008, sold out its CAD 198 Degrassi jersey by 27 September. All six sizes were gone. The jersey is royal blue, dated 2001 to 2009 for his years as Jimmy Brooks, and its details say Made in Canada.

Buy a Canadian label for the job it was first built to do, not the logo. Where a piece is sewn today is a second question for the brand's own page.

The job decided the materials you pay for: down filled by volume, zipper teeth turned inside, natural latex soles, Japanese selvedge.

For the cold, a parka built for Antarctica

In the 1980s Canada Goose developed the Expedition Parka, "Big Red", for the scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. It became standard issue. David Reiss, the founder's son in law, invented a machine in the 1970s that fills down by volume.

Mackage, founded in Montreal in 1999, begins every design with the material. Its down has carried the Responsible Down Standard since 2019.

For the mountain, zipper teeth on the inside

Arc'teryx judged zipper teeth the weak link in a waterproof jacket, so it put them inside: the WaterTight zipper. The brand calls it an industry standard. Climbers based in Vancouver started the label in 1989 in a basement, making climbing harnesses and packs (the Alpha SV Jacket is made in Vancouver, at ARC'One).

Willa and Nick Martire began norda in early 2020, testing prototypes from minus 35°C to plus 35°C between Montreal and the Eastern Townships. Its 001A, CAD 295, uses fibres the brand calls "strong as steel but light enough to float on water."

For every day, a shoe that sold out in 1973

Roots' first shoe, the Sport Root Shoe, set the heel below the toe; launched on August 15, 1973, it sold out by month's end. A waiting list began. Its Varsity Jacket followed in 1979, handcrafted in Canada at its own leather factory.

In 1998 lululemon opened its first retail space inside a yoga studio in Kitsilano, Vancouver. Reigning Champ, founded in Canada in 2007, sews a flatlock seam; one garment can pass through up to a hundred skilled hands.

For the city, a Degrassi jersey and jeans guaranteed uncomfortable

OVO was founded in 2008 by Drake and a Toronto collective. A pre owned OVO x Roots varsity jacket from the Nothing Was The Same tour is CAD 800 on the OVO shelf. That jacket ships worldwide.

Naked & Famous began in Montreal in 2008 with raw Japanese selvedge, and says every pair is cut, sewn and finished in Canada. Its 32 oz denim used yarns as thick as those in sailboat sails. The founder, Brandon Svarc, joked, "Guaranteed uncomfortable or your money back."

Buy the label for the job it was built to do. Ask where it is sewn second.

For your feet, soles that resist Satan

John Fluevog's Angel Soles, 100% natural latex, are engraved "Resists alkali, water, acid, fatigue and Satan." John and a fellow worker, Peter Fox, opened Fox and Fluevog in Gastown, Vancouver, in 1970. The shop first sold turn of the century footwear from a Mexican warehouse as "Brand new 50 year old shoes."

Viberg's first boots, in 1931, were for farmers, meant to be "bought once" and resoled for years. Its Stitchdown build, made for over 50 years, shows a double row of stitching. Resoling is the point.
