Consignment stores in Toronto: 12 shops and their fine print

These 12 consignment and resale shops in Toronto sell designer pieces second hand, and 8 print all sales final. In 2019, VSP Consignment put more than 800 pieces from the Schitt's Creek wardrobe online; they sold out within a day.

Pick your errand first, then read the fine print. Seagrave's returns page puts it plainly: "Since all items are on consignment, all sales are final." At a counter on Avenue Rd or Ossington, ask for two lines: the condition grade and the authenticity promise.

For a bag with its papers, from Yorkville to Yonge and Sheppard

A bag with its papers starts in Yorkville. Its owner, Courtney Watkins, writes that Mine & Yours opened in 2013; today it has a shop at 79 Yorkville Ave and two in Vancouver. Online, full priced clothing and shoes can come back within 15 days for store credit or an exchange.

Christina Adamo, who spent over 20 years in luxury retail, founded Luxury Finds Consignment, on the 2nd floor at 1560 Avenue Rd, open by 30 minute appointment. It listed a Hermès Jypsiere 28 in rouge Swift leather at $5,795.

Each piece is checked twice, then leather goes to an outside authenticator such as Entrupy. Bring photo ID.

Lafayette Consignment takes no walk ins. Find it in Unit 306 at 4750 Yonge St, and read the condition score out of 10 on every listing. Its Lifetime Authenticity Warranty has no time limit.

For a dress with a year on it, Yorkville and Mount Pleasant

The Cat's Meow has been at 180 Avenue Rd since 2006. Its window posts name the year: a Fendi 1999 runway suede and fur maxi skirt at $2,495, a Versace 1992 silk print pleated skirt at $749.

For a dress with its wear spelled out, try Rewind Couture at 577 Mt Pleasant Rd. Dawn Librach launched it in December 2014, and its five grades start at Good, meaning noticeable wear. If a piece tried on at pickup does not fit, swap it for store credit within seven days.

For a walk along Queen and Dundas West

A celebrity stylist and luxury collector founded Fashionably Yours, 707 Queen St W, in March 2009. On its date code guide, a Hermès year stamp is a letter in a circle or a square; before 1970, the letter stands alone. (A missing Chanel hologram sticker does not make a bag fake, the page adds.)

For clothes with no stains and no loose seams, try Garb at 1046 Queen St W, which takes only pristine pieces. "We are not a thrift store," its consignment page says.

If a refund on an online order matters, head to VSP Consignment, 1410 Dundas St W. It began as Dianne Rawlinson's Vespucci in Calgary in 1986; Britt Rawlinson opened VSP in Toronto in 2013. Its returns page is the only one of the 12 that prints a refund for a change of mind, on eligible online purchases within 7 days.

At 8 of the 12, the fine print is the only return you get.

For menswear and the archive, Ossington, Spadina and Maud Street

Before it was Seagrave's, it was I Miss You MAN, opened in 2014 and renamed in 2026. It has shops at 63 Ossington Ave and 1066 Yonge St. New pieces arrive every Friday at 12.

If the label matters more than the year, go to 174 Ossington Ave. Boketto began from a love of vintage Prada, Nepenthes and Comme des Garçons. It sells second hand Balenciaga, Prada, Rick Owens and Miu Miu, buys pieces outright rather than on consignment, and checks each one in house.

For avant garde pieces, DRIEW Garments at 222 Spadina Ave, unit C22, is the only official DEEPTI stockist in Canada. Its founder, Duy Anh Nguyen, grew up in Hanoi and calls DRIEW "A language for those who speak quietly but dress loud." Its archive carries Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester and early 2000s Mihara Yasuhiro.

For an archive coat, book 20 Maud at 20 Maud St, Unit B2. Christian Ferguson and Alex Maxamenko founded it, and Archive Threads, which shows there, listed an AW03 Raf Simons shearling lined parka at $5,985 USD.

What to ask before you pay

Ask for the grade first, in a shop or online, where the pre owned designer shelf on within lists 1,163 pieces, all at Utopia.

Ask for a certificate if you may resell: Lafayette can add one to any order, Luxury Finds sells one on request. DRIEW, Rewind and Garb print no authentication process, so ask how a piece was checked.

Before you set out, book ahead at Luxury Finds, Lafayette and 20 Maud. Lafayette is above the Yonge and Sheppard subway station; Garb is between the 501 streetcar's Dovercourt and Ossington stops.

If you are buying from home, check the shipping. Garb ships within Canada only; Lafayette ships only to Canada and the US, and 20 Maud and Archive Threads print no rates. Utopia ships to the US and worldwide.
