Dark academia outfits: buy one piece second hand

A dark academia outfit is campus dress from the 1930s and 1940s: a wool blazer, a knit and a leather derby. Buy one of them second hand, because the look began with a 1992 novel and brand new wool can read as a costume.

It started on Tumblr around 2014 and 2015, among readers of Donna Tartt's The Secret History, published in September 1992. Its six Classics students study at Hampden, a small, elite college in Vermont. Dead Poets Society, the 1989 film set at a boarding school in 1959, is another source the look credits.

Pinterest and Instagram picked it up around 2017, and TikTok in the early 2020s, when the pandemic shut schools. A stylist quoted by Hannah Southwick of USA Today called it "boarding school meets goth enthusiast".

For the quad: tweed and herringbone

Tweed began as another word. Its first name was "tweel", the Scots word for twill, the weave the cloth is made in. INTO THE EAST's brown tweed crop jacket is lined in silk, CAD 1,140, and MM6 Maison Margiela's black tweed blazer is CAD 2,295.

Herringbone is named for the bones of a herring, which its zigzag is said to resemble. Due West has the pattern in two brown coats, and the dearer one, COOR's at CAD 895, is all wool; Les Deux's, half wool, is CAD 699.

Undercover's grey blazer is felted wool with eye buttons, CAD 2,295. For a longer coat, RUOHAN, a Chinese label founded in 2021, makes the taupe Cooperi in 70% wool and 30% yak, CAD 2,200.

For the library: knits and pleated trousers

Cardigans are on the look's own list, beside blazers and Oxford shoes. A.P.C. makes its black Davis mostly from alpaca, marked down to CAD 329 from CAD 625, while Undercover's grey cardigan with zip details is 56% mohair, CAD 980.

Wear the knit under the blazer. A plain rib sweater from Les Deux, all wool in green or ivory, is CAD 279. Nina Ricci, in Paris since 1932, has a grey one marked down to CAD 879 from CAD 1,695, and more sit in the winter knits edit.

Trousers come pleated or patterned. Houndstooth, on the look's own list, runs through Song for the Mute's pleated pant, wool with 15% cashmere, down to CAD 299 from CAD 980. MM6 cuts its black pinstripe pair wide in the leg at CAD 995, and INTO THE EAST makes a brown tweed pair for CAD 695.

For the walk to class: the derby and the loafer

The look's list says Oxford shoes. Six pairs in the edit are derbies, and none is called an Oxford. The difference is the lacing: on a derby the eyelet facings are sewn on top of the vamp, open laced, and on an Oxford they are closed.
