Date night outfits for fall: trousers beat the dress

For the walk there: wool trousers and a heel

Wool is the answer to a cold walk. Nina Ricci, a Paris label since 1932, cuts a black flared trouser in 100% wool with a bow at CAD 1,580. Litkovska's grey pleated barrel leg pants are 98% virgin wool, CAD 1,100.

A wide trouser wants a heel under it. Guidi has tanned leather in Pescia, Tuscany, since 1896, and its 796ZI mid boot zips up the back on a metal heel, CAD 2,050. MM6 Maison Margiela's black calf Anatomic ankle boot is CAD 1,350, and women's boots holds 28 pairs in all.

For him, the same idea comes in pleats. Homme Plissé, Issey Miyake's men's line since 2013, makes a brown Tuxedo Pleats trouser at CAD 980. Helmut Lang's black wool zip pleated trousers are CAD 349, down from CAD 695.

For the table: silk and satin on top

Across a table, your date sees shoulders, hands and a face. Put the money there. RUOHAN, a Chinese label founded in 2021 and on the Paris calendar since spring summer 2023, makes the Bonaire top in willow, 100% silk, at CAD 610.

INTO THE EAST's sleeveless jacquard top is silk and wool (69.4% silk), CAD 670. Nina Ricci's pink bow shirt is satin in 100% polyester, CAD 599, down from CAD 1,225.

He gets the same rule with a jacket. Undercover's black tailored blazer is CAD 2,650, and the Homme Plissé Tailored Pleats long jacket is CAD 1,495. More jackets are in men's suits and blazers.

One piece of silver

Every one of the 41 pieces of jewellery in the edit is silver, down to a Chrome Hearts belt buckle. One ring is enough. Chrome Hearts started in a Los Angeles garage in early 1988, making leather jackets, with a master sterling silver jeweller, Leonard Kamhout, as its third partner.

Its Keeper ring is CAD 3,500 at Utopia, a resale shop, and a lightly used Forever ring in size 8 is CAD 1,300. Smaller labels cost less: Tom Wood's cushion band with black onyx is 925 sterling silver at CAD 895.

If it is a dress, make it leather or wool

The dress has its own history. In 1926 Chanel published a short black dress in American Vogue, and Vogue called it "Chanel's Ford", after the Model T.

For a cold night, pick a heavy one. Helmut Lang's Nappa Bubble dress is 100% lamb leather, CAD 899, down from CAD 2,520. The label dates to 1986 and first made its name on slim suits in black or white.

RUOHAN's Bouvet dress is 53% yak and 45% cashmere, CAD 995. MM6, Maison Margiela's second line since 1997, makes a folded wool dress in dark grey for CAD 1,345.
