How to tell if leather is real without a lighter

You can tell if leather is real in under a minute with 3 checks, the grain, the inside and the zip, on a rack or from a listing's photos.

You can tell if leather is real in under a minute with 3 checks: the grain, the inside and the zip. They work under a shop lamp or on a listing's photos at midnight, and none needs a lighter or a glass of water.

In 1931 the United States Air Corps gave its A-1 flight jacket a zipper and a leather collar, and called the result the Type A-2. The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum keeps one worn by Thomas Weems, navigator on a B-26 Marauder named Winsockie. On the morning of 4 June 1942, at Midway, Winsockie and 4 other B-26s were the first American aircraft to attack the Japanese carrier fleet.

His jacket's record lists seal brown horsehide, a brown rayon lining and a brass zipper, so the three checks were the spec. The word "genuine" on a tag is the weakest evidence on the whole jacket, because it names no grade at all.

Quick facts

  • The ranks: full grain, top grain, genuine and bonded, trade names no regulator polices (our field guide, revised 1 September 2026)
  • The A-2: from a 1931 order, and the US Air Force still issues it
  • US leather rules: in force since 3 October 1996, and jackets are not covered
  • The zip makers: Lampo's maker dates itself to 1887 in Palazzolo sull'Oglio, and Talon moved to Meadville in 1913
  • On within: 15 jackets whose listings give a leather body, CAD 579 to CAD 2,185, 7 of them by COOR, read 15 October 2026

Read the grain before the tag

Full grain is the hide's outer surface with only the hair taken off, so pores, healed scars and growth marks stay. It costs the most partly because only clean hides can wear it, says our field guide to leather grades: there is no sanding away a barbed wire scratch. Press a gentle fold with your thumb and it breaks into fine wrinkles that mostly settle back, where a heavy coating creases into hard lines.

Genuine leather commonly sits on a split, the lower layers, coated and pressed to look like grain. Corrected grain is sanded, pigment coated and embossed, and since a press can stamp that pattern onto any grade, texture alone proves nothing. Uniformity is the tell.

Bonded is shredded fibre glued to a backing, and US rules since 3 October 1996 say it should not be called leather. Those rules cover bags, wallets, footwear and belts, not jackets, so on a jacket you read the leather, not the law.

Lift the hem and read the inside

The lining was on Weems's record, and a careful listing still names it next to the hide. Herno, founded in 1948 in Lesa, Italy, gives the lining of its CAD 2,185 goat suede jacket to the percent: 71% viscose and 29% polyester.

Sulvam's Leather Switching Jacket in white, pieced soft leather made in Japan, has no lining, and an unlined jacket hides nothing. I like that, but at CAD 1,699, marked down from CAD 4,775, I would want close photos of the seams before paying.

Where the leather meets the lining, our field guide calls a folded edge, skived thin and turned under, labour a maker spends expecting inspection. A painted edge is fine when it is even, and it is where rushed work cracks first.

Makers put their names on the zip

Turn the pull over and read it, and the slider, for a maker's name (if you are short on time, start here). YKK began in Tokyo in 1934 under Tadao Yoshida, and the letters stamped onto its pullers became, in its own words, "the Company's trademark." RiRi, founded in 1936 in Mendrisio, Switzerland, patented the first die cast zipper on nylon in 1950.

A logo pull is fine when the listing names the maker, as COOR's lambskin swingtop does with a custom COOR logo zipper by YKK. YKK itself warns about counterfeit zippers, so a name is a reason to trust and not proof, which is why the zip is one check of three.

What a maker's price should show you

The COOR Goat Skin A-2 Leather Jacket is CAD 695, marked down from CAD 995. Its listing names all three checks: vintage finished goatskin, a quilted interior lining and a two way YKK zipper. COOR's 67 pieces, from a South Korean label whose name is short for Common Origins, sit at Due West, 431 Queen Street West.

What money buys is hide and time, and Horween, a Chicago tannery since 1905, puts a number on the time. Arnold Horween, its president from 1949 to 1983, said: "It takes us at least six months to make a cordovan shell."

The price tells you how hard to look. The checks tell you what you are looking at.

A jacket that asks a maker's price and cannot show a maker's grain, lining and zip is the one to leave on the rack. Weems's A-2 showed all three.

Before you pay, in a shop or from a listing

In a shop, tilt the jacket under a lamp: retained grain shows pores running in a direction, while a corrected surface repeats like wallpaper. Then open the inside pocket or lift the hem for the composition label, and turn the zip over. Smell it last: it can rule a piece out, but it cannot rank the ones that pass.

From a listing, ask for the grain lit low from the side, the composition label, the lining and both faces of the slider. Then ask our field guide's first question: "Full grain or top grain, in those words?"

Fans of the burn test will disagree, but I would skip the lighter and the water, since both can mark a jacket you do not own yet. The lamp and the fold work the same on a bag or a belt, so this minute pays off on every leather thing you buy next.

Common questions

Is genuine leather real leather?

Yes, genuine leather comes from a hide, but the phrase names no grade, and it is the lowest rank that is still hide. Our field guide calls it real "the way veneer is real wood."

How do I know if my jacket is real leather?

Read the composition label, the grain and the inside together, and trust the answer only when they agree. A tag that reads just "genuine" tells you it came from a hide and nothing more.

Is a real leather jacket worth it?

Yes, when it can show a maker's grain, lining and zip for the price it asks. I would start with the COOR calfskin biker at CAD 579, marked down from CAD 1,095, since its listing names the calfskin and the YKK zip. Then hold it against the 399 pieces in the men's jackets and coats.
