How to spot fake Canada Goose: the receipt before the badge

Spot a fake Canada Goose by its receipt and inner tags before its badge; border officers once found 55,000 fake crests. Counterfeiters copy the badge on purpose.

On 26 September a buyer asked a Reddit legit check forum about a Canada Goose jacket on Facebook Marketplace for $400. Its seller no longer had the receipt. That same week, others asked about a Langford parka, a bomber and a Maitland found on Vinted.

That missing receipt matters more than any close up of the badge. A counterfeiter can copy a crest by the thousand; the brand itself checks paper and intact tags.

The price is why the fakes exist

On 20 September a post on X, liked 3,509 times, put Canada Goose on a list of coat brands never to buy again. The charge: a "precio absurdo", an absurd price. One reply took the other side: "I haven't been cold since."

New, a Langford Parka is CAD 1,695, and the Expedition Parka, developed in the 1980s for the scientists at McMurdo Station and nicknamed Big Red, is CAD 1,995. A reader in Europe put the Wyndham at €1,525 in September.

At $400, the price settles nothing either way. A worn, real Canada Goose can ask that much.

A pre owned Kensington Parka asks CAD 400 at a resale counter, and the brand's own resale site asks USD 547 for a used Maitland in Good condition. The price tells you how hard to look. The paper tells you what you are looking at.

Inside the coat, the tags come first

Canada Goose was sewing holograms into its seams by 2012, WWD reported that October. A new label came in fall 2017, with a polar bear image and elements that can be seen from different angles. The brand ties the bear to Polar Bears International, which it has backed since 2007.

Its warranty page is plainer. The tags at the inner lining or seam must be intact, because removing them stops the brand verifying the coat. On down parkas and bombers that warranty lasts the life of the product and passes to a later owner, provided the coat is traceable.

Fakes were often missing that hologram, the Canadian Press reported in 2018. What is inside matters as much as the label.

A real Langford is made in Canada, where the brand runs seven factories of its own, and filled with 80% duck down and 20% feathers. The Chilliwack Bomber, drawn from what post war bush pilots in Canada's North needed on Arctic runways, carries the same fill. The brand's page, as it stood in 2025, said fakes use feather mulch or other fillers instead, often coated in bacteria, fungus or mildew.

On the sleeve, the badge is the second look

The crest the brand stitches into its products shows the North Pole from above, ringed with maple leaves and the name. Border officers in Germany and France once found 55,000 fake copies of it, sent from Asia.

The brand's counterfeit page now forwards to its Contact us page. As it stood in October 2025, it listed poor embroidery, uneven colour in the stitching and misshapen maple leaves. Some fakes could not spell "Canada" or "Arctic".

Dani Reiss, then the chief executive, told the Canadian Press in 2018 of fakes "as bad as the maple leaf that we have on our logo as stars". A black disc is no sign of a fake: the brand sells the same Langford with a black or a tonal disc, each at CAD 1,695.

On the hood, the fur dates the coat

Canada Goose bought no fur after 2021 and stopped making anything with fur in 2022. Its ruffs were coyote, thick and luxurious in the brand's words, where counterfeit fur looked "scraggly, tangled and sometimes dirty". So a real fur ruff dates from 2022 or earlier, one clue for the Vinted reader who asked how old a Maitland was.

In 2012 the District Court of Stockholm found five Swedish nationals guilty of fraud, trademark infringement and customs offences. They had sold thousands of fake Canada Goose jackets in Sweden between 2009 and 2012, with raccoon dog fur on the hoods instead of coyote. Two were sentenced to prison, and the brand was awarded 701,000 Swedish kronor.

Fake websites, and where real coats come from

Canada Goose began in 1957 in a small warehouse in Toronto and sold only through other shops until its first online shop in 2014. Its first stores opened in 2016.

Fakes sell online too. In the season before that 2018 report, the brand removed 30,000 fake ads and 1,700 websites posing as its official site or a legitimate seller. Reiss put it plainly: "The problem is you close one factory and another one opens."

Law enforcement and the company had also found thousands of Canada Goose bathing suits, a thing the brand had never sold. (A parka maker's swimsuit is the easiest fake on this page to spot.)

The crest is what a fake studies. The tags are what the brand reads.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns of websites with "the same look and feel" as a real maker, selling at big discounts. New Canada Goose comes, in the brand's words, from its website, its stores and authorized retailers. Its store finder lists 82 of its own stores, among them 244 Regent Street in London, the Champs Élysées in Paris and Ginza in Tokyo.

Used, the brand sells through Generations, which opened in 2023, grades every piece and ships only within Canada and the US. It also takes coats back by mail for a gift card, and what the Canada Goose trade in pays has the terms.

What to ask before you pay

Ask where the coat was bought, and ask for the receipt. Then ask for photos of every tag at the lining and seams, the hologram label and the badge. (A seller who lost a receipt years ago has done nothing wrong; tag photos are the fair ask.)

Set the ask against the brand's own used prices: a Langford in Good condition at USD 743, and Excellent pieces at about 70 percent of their new price.

Canada's Anti-Fraud Centre adds the rest. Verify the seller's address, phone number and email. Pay with a method that has fraud protection, such as a credit card, and pick up and pay in person where you can.

A shop's promise is its own. Every piece of Canada Goose on the shelf is at Utopia, a resale shop whose authenticators, its pages say, "ensure that everything bought and sold is 100% authentic". The same pages say "All items are final sale", and orders abroad take 7 to 10 business days, with duties on the buyer.

If you already paid and it turns out fake, you are not the first. Destroy it or return it to the seller, the Anti-Fraud Centre says, then report it to local police and to the centre.

Any label worth faking works the same way: look where the maker looks, and read the logo last.

Is the Canada Goose fur real?

On a real coat, yes: its ruffs were coyote until the brand stopped making anything with fur in 2022. Fakes in the Stockholm case used raccoon dog fur instead.

Is my Canada Goose real?

Yes if it came new from the brand's website, its stores or an authorized retailer; bought second hand, it rests on intact tags, the hologram label and a receipt. The brand's old authentication served only first buyers with proof of purchase, within 30 days.
