How to spot fake Rick Owens: check the season first

Rick Owens keeps an archive of 50 seasons by name, from Revillon FW03, in 2003, to Stone SS27. Tower is the name of FW26, and Mastodon of FW16. A season that does not fit the model is the first question to ask.

Then come the code, the copy and the shoe itself. None of these proves a pair is real on its own. A mismatch on any one is a reason to ask more.

Does the season fit the model?

On that resale shelf, 22 of 38 listing titles name a season, and the archive names 50. Tower is FW26, Temple SS26, Concordians FW25, Hollywood SS25 and Porterville FW24. Further back, Luxor is FW23, Edfu SS23 and Mastodon FW16.

So read the listing's title against that list. The same shop's Tower Jumbolaced Sneakers, black and milk, ask CAD 1,800 new; Tower is this autumn's season. Its FW16 Mastodon Drawstring Cargo Pants ask CAD 500, pre owned, from a season of 2016.

A fake can borrow a real season name, so the season is a filter, not a verdict. Rick Owens publishes a product guide for each season from SS23 Edfu to FW26 Tower. Open the guide for the season the listing names, and look for the model.

A season name is a claim you can check in a minute.

Does the code match the page?

Rick Owens opens almost every listing on its own store with a code. The FW26 Geobasket is RU02F4894; the FW26 Low Sneaks are RU02F4891; a DRKSHDW low sneaker is DS02F6802. Of the 750 listings I read, 713 started that way.

Sui Generis, a consignment shop, advises copying the code from the label exactly and searching for an exact match. It also warns that a style code repeats across every pair of that style, so a match is not a serial number. BrandCheck, an authentication guide, says Rick Owens runs no serial system for buyers at all.

Does the shoe match the copy?

Rick Owens' Geobasket and Low Sneaks pages describe each shoe down to the parts. The Geobasket is above the ankle, with an extended tongue and webbing tab, geometric panels and a padded back counter. It has a zipper on the inside ankle and a shark toothed bumper sole.

The Low Sneaks sit under the ankle and rise at the back, with six eyelets, laces, toe caps and the same bumper sole. If a pair in the photos has a different count of eyelets, or the zip on the wrong side, ask why.

One name to know: none of the 750 listings I read on rickowens.eu is called Ramones. Resale shops still use the name, and the same shop lists a Ramone Hollywood Low at CAD 1,200. The name alone tells you nothing either way.

What do the guides say to look for inside?

Legit Check by Ch says a real pair has a deeply engraved "Rick Owens" on the insole, set into the leather. On fakes it says the text is only outlined and sits level.

The same guide says the inside markings it calls serial inscriptions are thicker on a real pair, though they are not a unique number. It calls real stitching neat and even.

BrandCheck adds that mainline and DRKSHDW shoes carry "MADE IN ITALY" inside, in bold, solid letters. It says counterfeit pairs show a higher, more arched toe box. These are a guide's tells, not Rick Owens' own, so use them with the checks above.

Where can you buy it new?

From Rick Owens' 13 stores, or its own site. The stores run from South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa to the Jardins du Palais Royal in Paris, and none is in Canada. Its return policy asks for every original security seal still attached.

Second hand, the shop's word is the shop's. Utopia's policy says all sales are final, with no returns or exchanges. Ask for photos of the insole and the inside label before you pay.

The answer in one paragraph

To spot fake Rick Owens, check the season against its archive of 50, the code against its store and the shoe against its copy. Then look inside, where guides say the insole engraving is deep and "MADE IN ITALY" is bold on a real pair. No single check proves a pair real; a mismatch on any one is a reason to ask more or walk away.
