Jewellery stores in Toronto that make, mend and remake

We count 22 jewellery shops with checked addresses in Toronto, and the 14 below are sorted by what you came for.

In September 1945, a 16 year old named Gordon Edwards went looking on the Danforth for a shop that would let him advertise his radio repairs. Llewellyn Davies, who owned a watch repair shop, invited him in. They were partners for 60 years, and their original contract and old store front signage still hang on the wall at Edwards & Davies.

So buy from someone who can fix it, and bring your old gold before you buy new. Of the 14 shops here, 8 will rework gold or stones you already own, and 2 melt or cast it in their own studios.

A ring gets sized, retipped and cleaned for decades, so the bench behind the counter matters more than the case in front of it. Van Rijk Estate Jewellers' own site warns that its prices move with the gold price and the Canadian dollar. The gold in your drawer is already paid for.

For a piece made where you buy it

Jewel Envy began in 2006 at Spadina and Adelaide. In 2012 its founder, Gillian Batcher, bought a century home at 151 Marion St, on the corner of Roncesvalles. The house is blue.

Everything sold there is made on site by its resident goldsmiths, who also repair and redesign old jewellery.

Bring the old gold to Kim Drosdick Jewellery, 49 Roncesvalles Ave, where it can be melted down and reused in her studio. She has worked in custom design and goldsmithing for more than 25 years. A sterling silver ring runs $295 to $500, and gold starts at $595.

Michelle Ross moved to London in 2007, interned at Erdem and came home to Toronto in 2010. She works in brass, silver, pearls, resin and ceramics at 197 Sorauren Ave, where Saturday to Tuesday is "by appointment or by chance". Chance it.

Posy Fine Jewellery is named for posy rings, engraved inside with messages of love from the late Middle Ages to the Victorian era. The word comes from the French for a poem. At Studio 180, 15 Adrian Ave, reusing heirloom gold is the specialty.

For the ring, from Bloor Street to Mount Pleasant

Linda Penwarden established Penwarden Fine Jewellery, 631 Mount Pleasant Road, in 2003, and her master goldsmiths make each design in its own studio. It resizes, restrings pearls and remodels heirlooms. Watches go elsewhere.

Lilliane's Fine Jewellery, Suite 204, 89 Bloor St W, was established in 1990 and sells engagement rings, new jewellery and estate pieces. Lilliane, a gemologist and graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, redesigns old pieces and will buy, sell or trade the ones you are done with. Saturdays are by appointment.

Every custom piece at Royal de Versailles Jewellers, 101 Bloor Street West, has a ruby with its signature inlaid inside. The shop calls it "a little secret". Omega has its own boutique there.

Knar Jewellery began in Guelph in 1978, two brothers in 200 square feet, and its Yorkville store is at 38 Avenue Rd. It makes more than 800 custom designs a year (and if a ring is stuck on your finger, it will cut the ring off).

For something with a past

Cynthia Findlay Fine Jewellery & Antiques began in 1978 as a picnic table display at the Harbourfront Antique Market. Since spring 2009 it has been at 284 King St W, between the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra theatres. Vintage engagement rings are the focus, and it rents props to magazines and films.

The Van Rijk family has run Van Rijk Estate Jewellers since 1985. More than 6,000 pieces fill its showroom at 90 Eglinton Avenue East, some of them unsigned estate pieces from the 1800s.

Gold you sell there is tested on site and weighed in front of you, then paid on the live gold spot price. Watch the scale. The evaluation takes 15 to 30 minutes.

For the fix, go east

Edwards & Davies, 2834 Danforth Ave, takes rings from sizing to rebuilding and remakes old jewellery from the same gold and stones. If a lost piece was never appraised, it writes an estimate of replacement from photos. Any watch gets batteries and straps.

Allen Malloy, a jewellery maker and gemologist, and his wife, Yoko, who designs the displays, ran a travelling show from 1992. In 1995, the year their first child, Daniel, was born, they opened Daniel Jewellers at 1006 Queen St E. It resizes rings, replaces stones, engraves and repairs watches.

Anvil Jewellery, 1015 Queen St E, was founded in 1965 by Henry and Vickie Kasekamp, who came to Canada after the Second World War. It casts in house, so it can reuse your gold, and over 90% of its stock is made locally. It repairs only its own pieces, and takes jewellery from elsewhere into a redesign.

A ring outlives its receipt, so buy it from someone who can mend it.

For heavy silver

Before Clocks and Colours, Shane Vitaly sketched a two finger ring on a napkin in Bali and sent his last $3,000 to a factory. The napkin worked. In 2013 he and Jason Readman founded it in Toronto, where each sterling silver piece is designed, then carved by hand in Bali.

Its shop at 154 Ossington Ave is blacked out and sound treated for small shows. Collaborations include Slayer and Iron Maiden. Shane Vitaly, on the brand's about page: "I grew up loving heavy music, action sports and the people who lived for both."

Chrome Hearts, the older name in heavy silver, began in a Los Angeles garage in 1988, with a sterling silver jeweller, Leonard Kamhout, as its third partner. In Yorkville, Utopia holds 172 pieces of Chrome Hearts jewellery on within, $400 to $21,000 CAD, and ships them worldwide.

For a sense of humour, YVMIN began as a Beijing studio in 2012 and once cast penne, rotini and farfalle in precious metal. WDLT117 has 42 of its pieces on within, $99 to $345.

Saturday against Monday, and before you pay

Go on Saturday between noon and 5pm, when 6 of the 14 print walk in hours. Cynthia Findlay, Van Rijk and Posy print Saturday hours but ask for an appointment, so call ahead. Monday is thin: Jewel Envy, Van Rijk and Edwards & Davies close, and four more print no hours that day.

For Cynthia Findlay, take the TTC to St Andrew station and walk west on King to Toronto Antiques on King, a heritage building with no wheelchair access. For Posy, the 168 Symington bus runs from Dundas West station; the buzzer code is 180, and parking is free. Daniel Jewellers and Anvil sit a few numbers apart on Queen Street East, so pair them with the Leslieville shops guide.

Kim Drosdick and Posy take a 50% deposit, and Posy's is non refundable once you choose the stone; consultations at Jewel Envy are free. Michelle Ross gives a credit note, never cash, on in studio returns inside 14 days. Van Rijk offers a four month interest free layaway on in store purchases.

Rings get passed down, and on the Danforth so does the shop that mends them, now in its third generation.
