Moose Knuckles costs less at CAD 994, and Canada Goose goes colder, past minus 30°C. That is the middle Moose Knuckles jacket across two shops that hold both, against CAD 1,295 for the middle Canada Goose jacket.

Canada Goose and Moose Knuckles, on the shelf.

Read the label before the logo. Due West lists the black Moose Knuckles 3Q parka twice at CAD 1,395, both rated Level 4 for minus 20°C to minus 30°C. Style M32MJ128S says Made in Canada, while style M35MJ128S says Made in Vietnam for the same price.

The younger label tells the older story. Moose Knuckles, founded in 2009, says its family has kept Canadians warm since 1921, 36 years before Metro Sportswear, the company that became Canada Goose, began in 1957.

For the deepest cold past minus 30°C

Canada Goose's TEI 5 rating covers four pieces here, led by the Expedition Parka, built in the 1980s for scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Nicknamed Big Red, the men's parka in red is filled with 625 fill power white duck down and asks CAD 1,745, marked down from CAD 2,095. The women's PBI edition in royal blue asks CAD 1,795, marked down from CAD 2,145, and both are made in Canada.

The lowest entry to extreme cold is the Skreslet Parka in Summit Pink at CAD 995, down from CAD 1,250. Named for the coat Laurie Skreslet wore up Mount Everest in 1982, it uses 750 fill power down. If you want that Everest warmth under four figures, only one jacket in size L remains.

For city winter down to minus 30°C

Each maker rates its own coats on its own temperature scale. Level 4 on Moose Knuckles jackets claims Canada Cold from minus 20°C to minus 30°C, while Canada Goose TEI 4 covers minus 15°C to minus 25°C.

On paper, the Moose Knuckles 3Q prints the colder range for less money than the two Canada Goose parkas beside it. Its CAD 1,395 buys Responsible Down Standard 90 percent duck down and a removable shearling trimmed hood. The slim Carson in limestone asks CAD 1,495, marked down from CAD 1,895, and the Langford CAD 1,545, reduced from CAD 1,875.

The Ballistic bomber carries the same Level 4 for CAD 1,295. Of these, I would buy the 3Q labelled made in Canada, style M32MJ128S, if you wear S or M, the two sizes on the shelf. Otherwise I would pay more for the Langford: its rating stops at minus 25°C, but its label says made in Canada too.

For evening wear and bomber cuts

Paying more does not buy a colder coat. The dearest Moose Knuckles piece on the shelf is the Pioneer bomber at CAD 1,995, rated Level 3 from minus 10°C to minus 20°C. Unlike the Ballistic, the Pioneer adds 800 fill power down and fox fur lining in the hood and collar.

The Stagg bomber hits Level 3 at CAD 1,495 with sheep shearling and 90 percent goose down. Against them, the Canada Goose Chilliwack bomber asks CAD 1,295, down from CAD 1,675, and the Shelburne parka CAD 1,395, down from CAD 1,875.

Where each coat is sewn and guaranteed

Sam Tick founded Metro Sportswear in 1957 in a small warehouse. Dani Reiss joined in 1997, became CEO in 2001, and pledged to keep production in Canada. Canada Goose's history page says it owns and runs seven factories in Canada: three in the Greater Toronto Area, three in Winnipeg and one in Quebec.

Moose Knuckles runs from a head office on Chabanel Street West in Montreal, yet only 15 of its 76 pieces here state made in Canada. Another 21 name Vietnam, three name China and 37 name no country of make.

The label inside tells you where a coat was sewn, while the logo only sells the name.

Canada Goose covers its insulated outerwear against manufacturing defects for the lifetime of the product, and the cover passes to a later owner if the coat is traceable. Moose Knuckles covers only its Originals and Onyx series for their lifespan, other pieces for 1 year. Remove the inside tags and its warranty is void.

Canada Goose stopped manufacturing with fur in 2022, though 33 pieces on the shelf still carry a removable fur ruff. On the Moose Knuckles side, 26 pieces name shearling and 10 name fox fur.

What to check before you pay

Every Canada Goose piece at Due West is marked down, by 5 to 34 percent with a median of 23 percent. Only 28 of the 76 Moose Knuckles pieces there are, at 14 to 47 percent off the tag price.

Due West refunds regular priced pieces within 30 days but not sale items, so every Canada Goose piece there is a final sale. Shipping to the United States costs $45 for up to 9 business days, and to Western Europe and the UK $99. Duties and taxes are yours to pay, and parcels with fur may be held at customs, so read duty on clothes into the US before you order.

Curbside pickup at 431 Queen Street West in Toronto needs photo identification and the credit card used online. In the US, the 3Q's CAD 1,395 comes to about USD 978, while Moose Knuckles' own US site asks USD 1,395 and pays the duties itself.
