White T-shirt outfits under a jacket

White T-shirt outfits depend on what your jacket shows: choose among 3 plain or printed tees, listed from CAD 60 to 135.

Choose 1 white T-shirt for the part your jacket leaves visible: a plain neckline or the whole printed front.

Sunspel was making cotton T-shirts for export in 1908, long before Bape began in Harajuku in 1993. Bape's 1996 camouflage placed ape heads inside a hunting pattern. Its Purple Camo tee puts the camouflage inside one large head.

That reversal is worth seeing. Fasten a jacket over the plain shirt; leave it open over the ape head. A print you paid to wear deserves more space than a narrow opening between two lapels.

For the jacket you keep fastened

The plain Sunspel white crew neck, at CAD 135, leaves the jacket's opening clear. The shop describes a classic fit, 100% Egyptian cotton and manufacture in England. The photographed front is plain, with a round neck.

Thomas Hill opened Sunspel's first factory in Nottingham in 1860, making hosiery and underwear. The current shirt gives you a direct choice: white at the neck, without a picture to crop. Close the jacket and keep that line simple.

Wear dark trousers beneath a dark jacket, with the white neckline as the break between them and your face. Keep the rest plain. The shirt already gives you a colour change; another pattern at the neck makes a different outfit.

There is a second decision below the zip or buttons. An untucked strip of white beneath the jacket adds a horizontal line at the waist, so choose whether you want that line visible. Tuck the shirt to show only the neck.

Try this with your own white tee. At CAD 135, the Sunspel has the highest asking price here; buy it for this particular cut and stated material, after checking the size. A fastened jacket gives an existing plain shirt another outfit.

Browse the Due West catalogue with your jacket in mind. Once you decide to leave the front open, the shirt has more work to do.

For the jacket you wear open

Give Bape's Purple Camo white tee the space between a plain black jacket's sides. Outlined lists it at CAD 96. Dark denim keeps the purple concentrated on the shirt.

Bape began in Harajuku in 1993. Its archive dates the original camouflage to 1996 and describes a hunting camouflage base with ape head motifs placed within it. The pattern had heads inside it; this shirt has the pattern inside a head.

Look at the whole front. Purple camouflage fills the large ape head, with lettering below and white cloth around it. Open the jacket to show head and lettering together.

The white ground separates the purple from the black jacket and dark trousers. Camouflage trousers would spread another pattern across the outfit; choose solid denim when you want the tee to be what people notice.

White shoes repeat its base colour. Black shoes continue the trousers.

You can stop there. Matching every colour in a print would turn this shirt into a longer shopping list, when the jacket and denim already give the purple room.

The shop also shows CAD 160 crossed out, a CAD 64 reduction from that price to CAD 96. That is a price comparison. Buy the tee because you want the whole head visible, rather than letting the reduction decide how you will wear it.

For the jacket you take off

The white Showdown At Skydome T-shirt at parlor23 is CAD 60. The shop dates its opening to 2016 and says this shirt is designed and printed in Canada.

Its description specifies 100% ring spun cotton, garment dyeing and a weight of 6.1 ounces per square yard. The listed fit is relaxed. Those are the shop's specifications, while the photograph gives you the reason to choose this particular front.

Blue details, red lettering and a cartoon baseball scene cover the white ground. Give the picture the whole outfit's attention. Wear solid dark trousers and white shoes, then take the jacket off indoors so the front can be seen.

CAD 60 is the lowest asking price here. Choose it for the picture and listed cut. The price leaves a CAD 75 gap to the Sunspel, though the two shirts ask for different ways of dressing.

A small front tuck lets you show the waistband while leaving the back free. Check where the picture falls before tucking (keep the print above the waistband). You want to see the baseball scene, not fold part of it away.

Buy the picture, then let people see it.

Decide with the jacket already in your wardrobe

Put on your usual trousers and jacket before choosing another white tee. Fasten the front, open it, then take the jacket off. Pick the version you want to wear.

Check the hem as carefully as the neck. A white strip below a black jacket changes the outline even when the chest is hidden; tuck it away if you want the jacket's hem to mark the waist.

Price alone cannot rank these shirts. Their pages describe different cuts and give different amounts of fabric detail. Our note on clothing labels separates fibre names from finishes.

The next purchase can wait. Your jacket already determines how much of the shirt people see.

Common questions

What is the best white T-shirt to wear under a blazer?

Choose the plain Sunspel when only a narrow white neckline will show. A fastened blazer leaves the collar visible and crops a printed front.

Can I wear a T-shirt under a blazer?

Yes, wear the blazer open when you want the printed front visible. Give Bape's whole ape head and the lettering below it space between the jacket's sides.

What kind of jacket would look good with a white T-shirt?

Choose a plain black jacket with the purple Bape tee and solid dark trousers. The unbroken jacket colour gives the purple print space.
