Why is Supreme so expensive? $64 at retail, $300 resale

Supreme is expensive on resale because the brand sells a small run once, and then the piece is gone. What Supreme says about itself

"In April 1994, Supreme opened its doors on Lafayette Street in downtown Manhattan and became the home of New York City skate culture." That is the first line of the brand's own about page, read 20 September 2026. Its stores page lists 19 stores, 6 in the United States, 4 in Europe and 9 in Asia, and none in Canada.

The FAQ on its shop site explains the scarcity in one sentence. "Due to the limited quantities of our products, at this time we can only sell one style per product." Returns are exchanges "for online store credit only", and the email has to go in within 2 days of receipt.

Who owns it, and what they paid

VF Corporation, the owner of Vans and The North Face, bought Supreme from The Carlyle Group and Goode Partners for $2.1 billion, a deal completed on 28 December 2020. That is from VF's filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The 2020 filing says Supreme sells its own goods to its own customers, mostly online, and expected at least $500 million of revenue in fiscal 2022.

EssilorLuxottica, the optical group, agreed to buy Supreme from VF for $1.5 billion in cash on 17 July 2024 and closed on 2 October 2024, per the same filings. Its release counted "17 stores in the U.S., Asia and Europe" and called the way Supreme sells a model it would "work to preserve".

What retail costs, and what the shelf asks

The retail prices are on supreme.com. Read 20 September 2026, the first page of its US shop listed 39 products from US$30 to US$1,198, median US$168. Hooded sweatshirts ran US$168 to US$198, the Small Box Tee US$64, and a leather appliqué hooded work jacket US$388.

Now the Toronto shelf, the same day, in Canadian dollars. The 75 T-shirts asked $100 to $550, median $200. The 65 sweatshirts and hoodies asked $150 to $1,600, median $450, and the 22 jackets $300 to $2,000, median $550.

So a hoodie that cost about US$180 new asks a median $450 once it has sold out. The dearest pieces were a Fox Racing jacket at $2,000, two MM6 Maison Margiela zip hoodies at $1,600 and $1,500, and an Analogue Pocket at $1,400.

Who holds the pieces

All 264 sit at Utopia, 132 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, open noon to 8pm seven days, read from the shop's own site on 20 September 2026. Its refund page says "All sales are final" and that no returns or exchanges are taken. The same page says "All products sold are 100% authentic".

53 of the 264 carry a condition tag, 39 pre owned, 11 lightly used and 3 worn once, and 46 titles name the season, from FW15 to SS26. The Supreme Toronto shelf prints the asking price on each piece, the Supreme stockist page says which shop holds it, and the Supreme price guide carries every category.

Why is Supreme so expensive?

Because the brand sells one style per product in limited quantities and then stops, by its own FAQ, so anything you missed is bought from someone who got it. On 20 September 2026 a hoodie listed at US$168 to US$198 on supreme.com had a median asking price of $450 on the Toronto shelf. The price at the drop is ordinary, and the premium is on what sold out.
