Winter boots that survive Toronto and still look good
What road salt does to leather and suede, which rubber grips at minus ten, how deep the slush really is, and whether the boot can be resoled.

The white tidemark shows up on the left boot first, a wavy line an inch above the welt, and by the third week of January a second line has grown above it. It is not dirt and it does not brush off. Salt rode in with the slush water and crystallized in the leather when the water left.
Cold is not what kills boots here. Four months of hovering either side of zero does it, and the grey pond at every curb cut where the plough windrow walled in the drain, the one you edge around until the light changes and then walk through anyway. Temperature is the easy part.
What the salt is doing in there
Road salt here is mostly sodium chloride, and in slush it is in solution, soaking into leather like coffee into a napkin. The water leaves, the salt stays, and the crystals hold damp against the hide while pulling out the fats a tannery spent weeks working in. The leather goes pale and stiff, then splits at the vamp crease. The same crystals sit in the welt stitching and saw the thread from inside, which is how a good boot dies with most of its sole left.
Suede loses earlier. Salt mats the nap flat, and once it has dried grey and stiff no cream feeds it back. Brush it dry, never wet.
The twenty minutes when you get home
Wipe them the same night. Cool water lifts most of it, and one part white vinegar to three takes the tidemark faster, on a cloth wrung nearly dry. Then dry them away from heat: a radiator hardens the collagen for good, and the boot comes back a half size tighter. Room temperature, two days, newspaper inside. Condition only once they are bone dry, because cream on a damp boot seals the salt in with it.
Which rubber still grips at minus ten
A leather sole here is a hazard and a write-off at once: wet leather on packed snow behaves like felt on glass, and salt rots it from underneath.
Rubber grips ice by deforming into its microscopic roughness, and as it cools the compound stiffens and stops conforming, so a sole that felt sure in November feels like a plastic tray in January. Winter compounds stay pliable further down, and the better ones bind grit into a pale strip across the ball and the heel. Ice is slickest a degree or two below freezing, when friction raises a film of water on it. Toronto spends the winter at the slippery end.
Widely spaced lugs with a squared heel edge shed slush. Fine dense tread packs with snow and turns into a puck. Nothing on the box says what a compound does in the cold, so the crude test is your thumb: press the outsole indoors, then again after a night out on the balcony. If it barely dents cold, it will not conform to ice either.
How the water actually gets in
Waterproof is a construction: a moulded rubber lower, or a membrane bootie sealed in behind taped seams and a tongue gusseted to the top. Water resistant means the upper sheds for twenty minutes and then wets through. Treated means somebody sprayed it, which buys you one crossing at Spadina.
Water rarely comes through the leather panel. It comes in at the flex crease once the finish has cracked, at welt stitching the salt has opened, and over the collar when you misjudge a corner. Measure the shaft from the ground: 15 cm covers the ankle bone and loses to any puddle a plough has walled in, 20 cm clears most February curb cuts. Insulation for a commute, not an expedition
Boot temperature ratings come off a lab foot that is not walking. Read the insulation weight instead, in grams per square metre of batting. Around 200 g suits a half-hour walk in Toronto cold. 400 g is for standing still at a rink, and it cooks you between the platform and the desk.
If your walk is ten minutes at each end, uninsulated leather over a wool sock and a felt insole beats a heavy pac boot that makes you sweat underground and sends you out in a wet sock. Cold feet here are a moisture problem before an insulation one, usually a thick sock crammed into a snug boot.
Whether it can be resoled is the whole cost argument
Turn it over. Stitching around the perimeter, a welt or a stitchdown, means a cobbler can rebuild it more than once. A cemented sole is glued, and a moulded foam or polyurethane midsole cannot be rebuilt at any sensible price: foam compresses flat, polyurethane hydrolyses on a clock of its own.
Ask a cobbler what a resole on that construction costs before you buy the boot, because some soles they will not take at all. Three or four winters per sole, and the upper outlasts several. What ends a good boot early is a rotted welt, not a worn one. Wipe the welt.
The office boot, and the shoes in the bag
For an office, a plain or cap-toe leather boot in black or dark brown, shaft under the trouser hem, no visible hardware, on a lugged rubber sole. Seated at a desk it reads as a shoe. Standing, the sole gives it away, and it should. Black shows every salt line, which is at least honest.
With a dress the argument is the gap between hem and shaft. A tall shaft that meets the hem works, and so does a flat riding boot on a lug sole. A stiletto on a Queen West sidewalk in January is a wager, and the house does not take it.
Then there is the compromise nearly everyone here makes, which is carrying the shoes. Move the boots out of the footwell, though. A wet boot in a warm footwell dries with the salt still in it.

Are waterproof boots necessary in Toronto?
For daily winter walking in Toronto, yes, because the hazard here is standing slush at curb cuts, deep enough and salty enough to come through treated leather within a block. A sealed membrane or a moulded rubber lower stays dry, while a water resistant upper buys twenty minutes. If your winter runs car to garage, treated leather and a serious sole are enough.
