If you want the silver

Look at The Great Frog. Carol Lehtonen and Paterson Riley opened its first shop on Carnaby Street in 1972, and it is known for its silver skull rings. Chrome Hearts started 16 years later, in 1988, in a Los Angeles garage.

I will be plain about one gap: we have no page for The Great Frog. It sells from its own stores in London, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Gallery Dept. is the nearest in spirit. Josué Thomas started it in 2017 and reworks and paints vintage clothes in his Los Angeles studio. Its hoodies run CAD 650 to 800 at the boutique, against CAD 900 for a pre owned Chrome Hearts Boost hoodie there.

Amiri is the nearest in polish. Mike Amiri began by making stage pieces by hand for Los Angeles performers, and his jeans run CAD 450 to 1,200 there.

Both began in Los Angeles with clothes made by hand. Each has its own signature, and that is the point.

Buy the thing you liked about Chrome Hearts, not its logo on someone else's shirt.

If you want the attitude in small runs

Enfants Riches Déprimés is my pick here. Henri Alexander Levy founded it in 2012, and the Paris fashion federation lists it as based in Los Angeles and Paris.

The boutique has only 6 pieces, from CAD 1,000 to 2,000. A burgundy women's logo hoodie is CAD 2,000.

If you want the black leather

Rick Owens and Guidi answer the leather side. Rick Owens moved from Los Angeles to Paris in 2003, and the boutique has 37 of his pieces, from CAD 400 to 1,800.

Guidi is a tannery first, founded in 1896 in Pescia, Tuscany. WDLT117 holds 46 Guidi pieces, and its Guidi boots run CAD 679 to 2,650.

Who should skip the alternatives

• Skip them if you want the Chrome Hearts cross itself. Only Chrome Hearts makes it, and a copy sold under its name is a fake.
• If budget is the only reason, look at the small Chrome Hearts pieces first. At the boutique they start at CAD 100, with matches and a temporary tattoo set.
• Take them if you like the look and would rather pay for one maker's own idea than for a hard to find logo.
