Grailed in Canada is legit, but every buy is an import

Grailed is free for buyers in Canada, but prices are in US dollars, duty and tax are paid on delivery and a wrong piece must be reported within 3 days.

Yes, Grailed works from Canada, but prices are in US dollars and mail over CAD 20 owes duty and tax. That archive Rick Owens jacket from a US seller is fair game; price it as it will land.

IN STOCK NOW

Rick Owens, on the shelf.

Grailed is legit, and its range is the draw. For a Canadian, though, every buy behaves like an import, not like a shop.

The numbers below come from Grailed's help pages, the border agency's page, the 2026 Customs Tariff, the Department of Finance, and one resale shop's shelf and policies.

Quick facts

  • Buyer fee: none; sellers pay 9 per cent at $120 and up, 6 per cent below, $1.99 minimum.
  • Complaint window: 3 calendar days from receipt.
  • Border lines: CAD 20 by mail; CAD 40 and CAD 150 by courier from the US.
  • Duty on clothing: 17 or 18 per cent on most pieces, none for CUSMA origin; listed US made clothing owes a 50 per cent counter tariff since 8 September 2026.
  • On within: 1,152 pre owned pieces at Utopia, 499 pairs of sneakers and 40 bags among them, read 3 October 2026.

Grailed charges the seller, not you

Grailed's fee page, updated 13 May 2026, says "Grailed is free for buyers." Sellers pay the commission; the payment processing fee is separate. Purchase Protection covers a piece Grailed deems inauthentic, one that differs materially from its description, or the wrong item, reported within 3 calendar days.

For a Canadian, two other pages matter more. Purchases are "made in USD only," and duties and taxes are "the responsibility of the buyer or receiving party at the time of delivery."

Mail against courier decides what you pay

The Canada Border Services Agency's low value shipments page splits mail from courier. By mail, even from the US, anything over CAD 20 owes duty and tax. By courier from the US, tax starts above CAD 40 and duty above CAD 150.

The courier lines moved when CUSMA took effect on 1 July 2020. The mail line never did; it rests on the Postal Imports Remission Order of 16 October 1985.

Clothing made in Canada, the US or Mexico pays no duty under CUSMA. But since 8 September 2026, listed clothing made in the US owes a 50 per cent counter tariff. Footwear, handbags, jewellery and watches are off that list, so the Jordans miss it.

Couriers bill their own clearance fee, which the CBSA does not refund. Full rates sit in our note on duty on clothes into Canada.

A return needs the listing to be wrong

Grailed allows a return only when the listing was wrong on "authenticity, color, condition, fabric, or measurement." For anything else, a wrong fit included, "the seller is not required to provide a return or refund."

Checkout+ by Redo, optional at checkout on select listings, gives 3 days from delivery to file a return Grailed Protection does not cover.

Sending a piece back does not send the duty back; claim it from the CBSA on Form B2G, with proof the goods left Canada.

The 3 days start when the parcel lands, not when you finally open it.

For the one who wants to see the flaw first

Utopia, at 132 Cumberland Street in Toronto, sells pre owned designer pieces. Start with its pre owned shelf or pre owned sneakers.

Every pre owned piece has photos of its condition and each flaw, plus a wear grade. Collect it at the counter, or the shop processes orders in 1 to 2 days and ships with tracking.

It is one shop, a fraction of Grailed's range, and "All sales are final." within does not authenticate pieces; the shop states that everything it sells is authentic. You see the flaw first, and you keep what you buy.

Before you pay

Ask the seller whether it goes by mail or courier. Convert the USD price and add the duty and tax that apply before you offer. Measure a jacket you own against the listed measurements first.

If the declared value looks inflated, ask the seller before accepting the parcel; you may not be reimbursed after. Open it the day it lands and photograph everything (photos first, then try it on).

Buy from abroad and the listed price is only the first number on the bill.
