A velvet dinner jacket over black trousers is festive attire. A jacket printed with snowflakes is a costume, and the difference is that one can be worn again in March.

Festive attire is also a bad instruction, because it names a mood and leaves the formality unstated.

Holiday cocktail is cocktail attire, in December fabric

Holiday cocktail is cocktail with the weight turned up. Knee length or midi for a dress, a dark suit with a fine shirt and no tie, or trousers with something structured over them. What changes in December is cloth rather than shape: wool crepe instead of chiffon, velvet instead of linen, a heavy satin that holds its line. Shoes close over the toe, and sheer hosiery in a dark shade fixes the bare leg that otherwise reads as summer.

Black tie optional takes a very dark suit

Black tie optional hands you the choice. A tuxedo is correct. So is a very dark suit with a white shirt and a black tie, which will not look undressed beside one. It does not mean business clothes. If the office has taken a ballroom and used that phrase, somebody has planned a real night.

The office party with no code at all is the hardest one

An invitation with no dress code is not an absence of a rule. It is a rule you read off the details: the hour, the venue, who signed the email. Four in the afternoon in the office kitchen is one evening. Seven at a restaurant with a set menu and a seating plan is another, and it has a dress code even though nobody typed it.

The working rule is one step above the dressiest ordinary day your office has. If people wear knitwear and good denim on a Friday, that step is tailored trousers, a shirt with body to it and a jacket. If the office already runs to suits, the step is fabric and colour rather than formality: velvet, a knit in place of the shirt, a polished shoe. Both failures are remembered by the same people: the colleague who came straight from a desk, and the one who dressed for a nightclub and spent the night adjusting it.

The room is your colleagues, and the outfit has to survive Monday

The retailer pages treat a work party as a party. It is a work event held at night, the audience is people who make decisions about you, and somebody will take a photograph that ends up in a group chat.

The tests are physical. Run them at home the weekend before. Sit down on a hard chair and see where the hem goes. Raise both arms as though reaching for a glass off a high tray. Look at it under the flattest overhead light in your apartment, which is nearer to an office corridor at eleven at night than a fitting room. Anything that needs managing all evening will be managed all evening, and the managing is what people notice.

The coat check problem

You arrive in the coat and you leave in it, and until you are through the door it is the whole outfit. A parka over satin is fine at a venue with a coat check and a real problem at one without, where the coat spends the night over a chair back, in every photograph. Where there is a check, the coat can be technical and warm because nobody sees it. Where there is not, it is part of what you wore, and the answer is a wool overcoat that reads as tailoring, cut long enough that no dress hem hangs below it. Festive attire asks for evidence of effort, and nothing on the invitation asks for a costume.

What actually goes wrong

The room will be too hot. A private room heated for December and filled with a whole company runs warm fast, and the heavy knit that felt right on the sidewalk is why you spend the party by the door. Dress in pieces that come apart.

The night is longer than you plan for, and most of it is standing, so wear a shoe you have already walked in. A flat loafer under a velvet suit is not underdressed. Carry a bag you can hold in the hand that is not holding the drink, because the tote on the floor is what gets left behind.

Getting home means salt, slush and a walk to a car. Boots on, good shoes in a bag, and suede in December is a decision rather than an accident. Hang the garment two days ahead so the creases drop out, and check every button on the hanger rather than on the way out.
