TIFF 2026 ran from 10 to 20 September 2026, its fifty first edition. The 2027 festival, the fifty second, runs from Thursday 9 to Sunday 19 September 2027. The dress codes and the weather below hold for 2027, and the prices are as read on 20 September 2026.

TIFF names the following festival's dates in its awards release on the closing day. It named the 2026 dates on 14 September 2025, and the 2027 dates on 20 September 2026.

Quick facts

  • Dress code: none published. 3 codes in practice, from gala to daytime
  • Venues: 6, all within a few minutes of King Street West
  • Weather: September in Toronto averages a high of 22.0°C and a low of 13.8°C
  • Bags: nothing larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches gets past the door
  • Dresses: 42 on within's Toronto shelf on 20 September 2026, $469 to $2,300

Buy it here rather than abroad: the Toronto dresses shelf is duty paid, and our duty guide shows what ordering costs.

A TIFF screening is two different evenings. A Gala at Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales or the Royal Alexandra has a red carpet outside and a full house that has decided to dress up. A 9am screening at Scotiabank is a cinema at breakfast time.

Dress for the screening you are going to, not for the festival in the abstract.

The six venues

TIFF Lightbox and Scotiabank Theatre take the everyday screenings. Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales Theatre and the Royal Alexandra Theatre take the galas and the red carpets.

The sixth is new. The John Bassett Theatre inside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was used by TIFF for the first time in 2026, and it seats more than 1,200. If your ticket says Front Street, that is where you are going, five minutes south of the rest.

The three dress codes

The gala or premiere. Cocktail attire, with room to go further: a midi or floor length dress in a colour that holds up under flash. Or a dark suit with a tonal shirt, no tie, a small bag and polished shoes.

Roy Thomson Hall is cavernous, so clean lines read better than detail from forty rows back. Browse dresses and suits and blazers with that in mind.

The evening screening. The 6 or 9pm film with a Q&A after asks for what you would wear to a good dinner. A silk shirt with wide trousers, a slip dress under a leather jacket, or a fine knit with dark denim and a blazer.

A drink on King Street follows, so pick something that still works at 11pm.

The daytime screening and the line. Good jeans or tailored trousers, a crisp shirt or a T-shirt under an unlined jacket, and shoes you can stand in for an hour. Sunglasses for the line, a layer for the cinema, and fit and fabric doing the work.

September in Toronto, the weather truth

Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes 1991 to 2020 normals for September. At the Toronto City station: an average daily high of 22.0°C, a low of 13.8°C and a mean of 17.9°C. At Pearson the same three are 22.3°C, 11.6°C and 16.9°C, because the airport runs colder at night.

So a day can start on a patio in the sun and end in a cold wind off the lake. Layers are the whole strategy: a trench or light wool coat, a scarf for the theatre, an umbrella that fits in a bag.

TIFF tells you to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early, and Rush lines form an hour out. Expect to stand on the sidewalk even with a ticket, so wear shoes you have broken in.

You will spend more of TIFF on a sidewalk than on a carpet. Dress for the sidewalk.

Why buying here beats ordering from abroad

The border is the argument and the numbers are public. Canada Border Services Agency's tariff, edition T2026-2 in force from 1 September 2026, charges 18 per cent on knitted apparel and 17 to 18 per cent on woven.

A leather handbag is 10 per cent. Women's leather footwear over $30 a pair is 11 per cent.

Goods that originate in the United States or Mexico enter free under CUSMA, and European Union goods enter free under CETA, so origin decides whether duty applies at all. Ontario's 13 per cent HST applies either way, and Canada Post adds a flat CAN$9.95 handling fee on every dutiable item.

Carrying it back yourself has its own rules. There is no personal exemption on a same day trip, CAN$200 after 24 hours, and CAN$800 after 48 hours or a week. Our guide to duty on clothes into Canada walks the whole calculation.

Where to buy, late

TNT at 87 Avenue Road stocks designer dresses and tailoring in depth. 119 Corbò on Yorkville Avenue has the avant garde answer. WDLT117 at 7 St Thomas Street holds the pleats, and gravitypope at 1010 Queen Street West solves the shoes.

Common questions

Is there a dress code at TIFF?

No, TIFF publishes no dress code for its screenings. Its Know Before You Go guidance covers arriving early, bag sizes and keeping your ticket on your phone. The code you feel is social: galas at Roy Thomson Hall and the Princess of Wales draw cocktail attire, and ordinary screenings look like a well dressed night out.

Can you wear jeans to a TIFF screening?

Yes, and most people do for daytime and many evening screenings. Dark, well fitting denim with a good jacket, a clean shoe and one considered accessory is a correct TIFF uniform. The only place jeans feel wrong is a Gala premiere, where everyone else has dressed up.

When is TIFF 2027?

TIFF 2027 runs from Thursday 9 to Sunday 19 September 2027, its fifty second edition. The dates came in TIFF's awards release on 20 September 2026, the closing day of TIFF 2026, which ran from 10 to 20 September.

Is it acceptable to wear jeans to the theatre?

At TIFF, yes: galas at 3 of its 6 venues draw cocktail attire, and the rest look like a good night out. Dark, well fitting denim with a good jacket, a clean shoe and one considered accessory is a correct uniform for daytime and most evening screenings at TIFF Lightbox and Scotiabank. The one place jeans feel wrong is a Gala premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales or the Royal Alexandra, where everyone else has dressed up.
