How to spot fake Moose Knuckles: scan the side seam first

To spot a Moose Knuckles fake, start with the price, CAD 1,395 for a new 3Q, then check the side seam tag, the steel plate and the hood trim.

To spot fake Moose Knuckles, scan the side seam tag and hold the price against CAD 1,395 for a new 3Q. Ask the seller for photos of that tag, the steel plate and the trim on the hood.

Moose Knuckles, on the shelf.

The receipt matters less than you think, because Moose Knuckles put its own check inside the coat. It is an NFC tag your phone can read, so a second hand coat with no paper still gets an answer.

I trust the seam over the paper, and the brand's own pages point you to the seam too. Keep the receipt for the warranty, which needs proof of purchase and is void if the inside tags come out.

Quick facts

  • New price: CAD 1,395 for an Original 3Q in Canada, USD 1,395 in the US and GBP 1,150 in the UK, each on the brand's own site
  • Warning sign: 80% off, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's example, which on a 3Q comes to CAD 279
  • The tag: NFC, on the side seam, read by Android phones from 2012 and by an iPhone XR, XS or newer
  • Store locator: 405 places, among them 14 Moose Knuckles stores, 10 outlets and 372 shops that sell it
  • On within: 77 Moose Knuckles pieces at 2 boutiques, CAD 400 to 1,995, median CAD 895, read 15 October 2026

The listing against the brand's own price

The brand ships free and pays taxes and duties abroad, so its price in your currency is the real one to beat. At Due West, a shop on its store locator, the black 3Q costs the same CAD 1,395.

CAD 279 is 80 percent off a new 3Q, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's example of a warning sign, and at that price I would want every photo below. A low price alone proves nothing, though: the women's Anguille shearling parka is marked CAD 739, 47 percent under its CAD 1,395 tag.

The brand has 10 outlets of its own, Woodbury Common and Bicester Village among them. Pre owned pieces on the Moose Knuckles shelf start at CAD 400, and the median across all its pieces is CAD 895. So the price tells you how hard to look, and the coat tells you what you are looking at.

The tag in the side seam is the brand's check

Moose Knuckles puts an NFC tag on the side seam of every product, and says that without one there is a chance the coat is a fake. A phone held close opens a page that says whether the coat is authentic, and the tag needs no battery.

Android phones from 2012 (Android 4.2) on can read it, as can an iPhone XR, XS or newer, while an iPhone 7 or 8 needs an app. Owners of an iPhone 6 or earlier get the brand's driest line: "it's time to buy a new phone".

Its page gives no year the tags began, so an older coat without one is a question for the seller. Due West's descriptions say its 3Q and Ballistic are made in Vietnam, and the brand says its core parkas are made in Canada. Both labels are real, and neither is a tell.

The plate is steel, and the finish has to match

Moose Knuckles dates its family's coat making to 1921 and its own founding to 2009, designs in Montreal, and says it stands by its "premium hardware". Its MK emblem is steel, in six finishes that include matte silver and 14k gold plated.

The Gold Series 3Q, at CAD 1,495, carries gold hardware that the brand says "refuses to blend in". The brand's zippers are heavy duty YKK, and the same shop lists a one way zipper with a logo puller and a gunmetal metal logo on the Ballistic. So a silver plate on a Gold Series listing, or a pull with no logo, is a question for the seller, never a verdict.

Ask for the inside of the yoke too, where the brand's logo shows a hockey fight between Canada and its neighbour to the south. Its own page says this reflects the brand's humorous spirit.

The hood trim tells you the model, not the year

On 4 July 2021, FashionNetwork's Jennifer Braun reported the brand's commitment to end all production with natural fur by the end of 2022. Its fur policy page still says its fur is almost entirely farmed fox, and I found nothing that says whether the pledge was met. That leaves a fur trim unable to prove a coat real or tell you its age.

The same shop's 3Q and Ballistic carry a removable sheep shearling trim, the brand's Arctic Shearling or Neoshear, which zips in and zips out. Its Cloud 3Q has a snap off hood with a fox fur trim, and its fill line reads 90% down, 10% waterfowl feathers.

Copies the brand took apart held fillers instead of down, and it warns that "no fur and no down" leaves you cold. Match the trim and the fill to the model's own description (and since the shearling zips out, ask whether it comes with the coat).

What to ask before you pay

Ask for photos of the side seam tag, the plate, the zip pull, the inside of the yoke, the composition label and the hood trim. Then ask the seller to scan the tag and send a recording of the page it opens.

A seller with a real coat loses nothing by scanning the seam on camera.

Check a shop against the brand's store locator, which lists 372 shops that sell it. Its own stores include 57 Greene Street in SoHo and Kurfürstendamm 200 in Berlin.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre adds the rest: know the market value, verify the seller's address, phone number and email, and pay by credit card or in person.

When the coat arrives, scan the tag yourself and hold the coat against the photos you were sent. On 15 October a Canada Goose buyer found that the labels on a second hand parka did not match the advert's photos (see how to spot fake Canada Goose).

If a scan says not authentic, the brand says to contact its customer service. For a coat you know is fake, the Anti-Fraud Centre says to destroy it or return it to the seller and report it to local police and the centre. There is no shame in that report.

A good parka changes hands, and this one carries the brand's own check with it.

Common questions

How can you tell if a Moose Knuckles jacket is real?

Scan the side seam tag, then check the plate, zip pull and hood trim against the model's description, and the price against CAD 1,395 for a new 3Q. Half of the 69 Moose Knuckles jackets and coats cost CAD 994 or less, so a lower price alone settles nothing.

Do all Moose Knuckles jackets have an NFC tag?

Yes, the brand says every Moose Knuckles product has one, on the side seam. Its pages do not say when the tags began, so ask about an older coat without one.

Is the fur on Moose Knuckles real?

Yes: where a model has fur, the brand says it is almost entirely farmed fox. The 3Q and the Ballistic carry a sheep shearling trim instead.
