How Tokyo actually dresses, by the calendar not the thermometer

Outside Shibuya Hikarie on the first day of September the shows are by invitation only and the free part is the pavement. Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO runs 31 August to 5 September this year, twenty eight collections with Hikarie as the main venue, and Vogue's teams shoot Aoyama-dori every season. The afternoon will sit between 27 and 32 degrees, in humidity that soaks a shirt between the ticket gate and the escalator. Almost everyone photographed will be dressed for autumn.

The September magazines are shooting wool, and this year they have settled on chocolate brown suede. It is also peak typhoon season here and nothing dries.

The clock is a date, not a temperature

Koromogae falls on 1 October, and schools, offices and uniformed services change on the calendar rather than the thermometer, which is why the city darkens into autumn cloth overnight while the afternoon is still 25 degrees. The weather takes its time. Dry air arrives mid October, highs slide from the low twenties into the high teens, evenings settle at 12 to 15 degrees, and the first coat morning belongs to early November at around 17 degrees, a fortnight before the ginkgo turn at Meiji Jingu Gaien.

That leaves the wardrobe six weeks ahead of the weather, and everything worth noticing happens inside the gap. Autumn cloth in summer heat allows two rules: nothing heavy, and nothing that cannot come off in one motion.

The two Harajukus, and one of them is on the record

GR8 occupies the 2.5th floor of Laforet at 1-11-6 Jingumae, with a ground floor annex opened in February 2023 in the room Madstore Undercover used to hold. Mitsuhiro Kubo buys more than three hundred labels into it, maison pieces racked beside emerging Japanese names and underground street, and lined the annex with mirror and silver under living ikebana hung from the ceiling. He told Fashionsnap he wanted the space to express 原宿の二面性, the two faces of Harajuku: shrine forest on one side of the tracks, fashion street on the other. On drop days it is mobbed.

Cheap against serious is the local grammar. In the Cat Street backstreets, CANNABIS has traded at 5-17-24 Jingumae since 2000, fifty or so labels deep into club culture: Phingerin, Black Weirdos, Subu, CamperLab. Over on Meiji-dori, ADDITION ADELAIDE has run since 2002 with The Row, Vetements and Our Legacy on the rail. The same person shops both doors in one hour. The Japanese designers this city actually wears are a separate ledger.

Sneaker first, then everything else

Read the street style galleries filed from Hikarie and the order of dressing is legible: the shoe was chosen first. Trouser width answers to the shoe, hem length to the trouser, the jacket is whatever survives being carried. In September that is a weather ruling too: a leather sole and a suede upper both lose to a typhoon afternoon. The brown suede loafer the magazines are pushing is a mid November proposition at the earliest.

Washed leather, and the shops that keep it

The second layer is usually older than the first, and usually leather. ARCHIVE STORE runs from a basement at 1-12-16 Jinnan, staging exhibitions like a small museum and dealing archive Maison Martin Margiela, Raf Simons, Helmut Lang and Number (N)ine at prices that track the global archive market. LAILA VINTAGE at 5-46-2 Jingumae holds the gallery grade end, priced as objects. Its sister shop LAILA TOKIO closed its Shibuya room on 2 June 2024 when the building came down, after a farewell showing of Maison Martin Margiela from spring 1993, and now works by appointment in Daikanyama.

Up the hill, Lift Daikanyama folded its two rooms, Lift écru and Lift étage, into one ground floor unit in 2021: number 101 of a residential scale building at 16-5 Daikanyamacho. Carol Christian Poell, m.a+, Label Under Construction, Ann Demeulemeester. One of very few doors in the city where a Poell can be handled in person, and the wrong room for colour.

The river silhouette

1LDK takes its name from the floor plan code, one room plus living, dining and kitchen, the original shop literally apartment 1-A at 1-8-28 Kamimeguro. Universal Products, EVCON and the house label MY___ hang there, and the sister room apartments. sits a block over at 1-7-13. This is the Popeye city boy uniform at source, and by the Meguro river it stops being a magazine idea: wide trouser, soft knit, sneaker, a coffee, nothing announcing what it cost. A daytime wardrobe that does not do evening.

Tokyo does not dress for the weather; it dresses for the date.

Ginza rewards the first hour

Dover Street Market Ginza has held seven floors of the Ginza Komatsu West wing at 6-9-5 Ginza since 2012, the Elephant Space sculpture court by the entrance, Bibliotheca and Rose Bakery at the top. Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe's house owns it, so the independence is spirit rather than shareholding. It trades 11:00 to 20:00 daily, and weekends are a tourist crush. ESTNATION Roppongi Hills does the other job, Auralee, ATON and CFCL on the same two floors as Jil Sander and Dries Van Noten at 6-10-2 Roppongi, with a satellite on the fourth floor of GINZA SIX. What the next six weeks ask of you

Go on a weekday and go early. Dover Street Market Ginza's first hour is the only quiet one downstairs; Cannabis unlocks at noon, so Jinnan and the Cat Street backstreets make a sane start, Laforet after. Nakameguro and Daikanyama are one walk, river first, hill second.

Buying is cloth weight measured against the gap. Six weeks sit between koromogae and the first coat morning, and only unlined tailoring, a shirt jacket or a washed leather blouson serves them, so anything bought this month is judged at 25 degrees with the sleeves pushed up. A coat is a November to March instrument, priced across four winters rather than one. Check a knit is fine enough in gauge to go under that coat in December, and ring the shop before you go: the directories run a year or two behind the street.
