Where to buy Japanese designers in Tokyo, floor by floor

Dover Street Market Ginza publishes a floor guide on its own site, and search cannot read it. The page renders in script, so seven floors above Suzuran-dori never reach a snippet or an answer engine, and what ranks instead is a Numero TOKYO store feature from 2017, filed before Phoebe Philo had a label of her own. Ask the open web where a label lives here and you get a scrape of a scrape.

The working answer is geographic. Ginza is where corporate luxury and Rei Kawakubo's chaos trade on one block, Aoyama keeps the memory in rooms buying since 1990, and the rest sits in apartment sized units off Cat Street and along the Meguro river, at addresses that read like leases.

Seven floors on a side lane

Dover Street Market Ginza has held floors 1 to 7 of the Ginza Komatsu West wing at 6-9-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku since 2012, off the boulevard on Suzuran-dori, open 11:00 to 20:00 seven days. The ground floor holds the Elephant Space and a Louis Vuitton space, The Row is on 3, and the seventh floor is Bibliotheca plus Rose Bakery, where you go when the building has won.

In between: the full Comme des Garçons universe, Prada, Loewe, Miu Miu, Simone Rocha, Kiko Kostadinov, Paul Harnden, sacai, doublet and A.presse. Independent in spirit, Comme des Garçons owned in fact, and on a Saturday a tourist crush. Go on a weekday at opening.

Aoyama keeps the memory, Roppongi keeps the hours

ADELAIDE has traded on the Kotto-dori side of Minami-Aoyama since 1990, two floors of B-Town at 3-6-7 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku. Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, Loewe, Lemaire, Toteme and Balenciaga sit on the same web store as the newer end of the buy, Prototypes and Marie Adam-Leenaerdt. Thirty six years in one district is Aoyama's institutional memory among select shops.

ESTNATION Roppongi Hills takes 1F and 2F of the Keyakizaka Complex at 6-10-2 Roppongi, Minato-ku, 11:00 to 20:00, with a satellite, Assemble Estnation, on GINZA SIX's 4F. Bottega Veneta, Chloé, Dries Van Noten, Erdem, JW Anderson and Helmut Lang hang a rail away from Auralee, ATON, CFCL and Fetico. A corporate select at department store scale: wrong for subculture, right when you have two hours and four labels to see.

Harajuku has two faces and both of them sell

GR8 occupies Laforet Harajuku's 2.5F at 1-11-6 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, and took a second, sneaker and accessory space on the 1F on 23 February 2023. Mitsuhiro Kubo buys more than 300 labels into it, maison pieces beside emerging Japanese names, and told Fashionsnap he built that expansion, mirror and silver fixtures under ikebana suspended from the ceiling, to express Harajuku's two faces: shrine forest one side of the tracks, fashion street the other. On drop days it is mobbed. Its own site blocks crawlers, so Laforet's tenant directory is the page that proves it open (a shop hiding from search is telling you how it prefers to be found).

ADDITION ADELAIDE, the Meiji-dori sister store, has been at Arrow Plaza Harajuku 1F, 4-19-8 Jingumae since 2002. The two shops share one web store, and it is the pair, not the seven floors in Ginza, that runs Phoebe Philo, The Row, Vetements and Marine Serre.

CANNABIS opened in Harajuku in 2000 and says it has run alongside the underground scene for over 25 years. Not a luxury shop, and treating it as one wastes the visit: around 50 labels, HOAX PRODUCTS, aoi industry, SHOOP, P.A.M., Black Weirdos and CamperLab, 13:00 to 20:00. It reopened from a renewal on 2 August 2025 and the listings never caught up, so the addresses on the directory pages disagree with the one on its own site. Ask the shop.

Retail leased like an apartment

Lift Daikanyama is unit 101 of garden Daikanyama, 16-5 Daikanyamacho, Shibuya-ku, one ground floor room made in 2021 out of two long running shops, Lift ecru and Lift étage. It is one of very few doors in Tokyo for Carol Christian Poell and m.a+, with Label Under Construction, Ann Demeulemeester, The Viridi-anne and Archivio J.M. Ribot. Nothing in the room is coloured or logoed, and nothing is cheap.

1LDK trades out of unit 1-A at 1-8-28 Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, 13:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and from noon at weekends, with a second room, 1LDK apartments., at 1-7-13. Universal Products, EVCON and the house label MY___ run through the autumn arrivals. The Popeye city boy uniform at source, wrong for an evening and right for the rest of the year.

The basement where the nineties are for sale

ARCHIVE STORE deals out of B1 of the Wako Bldg. at 1-12-16 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku, and stages its stock as exhibitions, inviting you on its own site to encounter the masterpieces designers left behind. Archive Maison Martin Margiela, Raf Simons, Helmut Lang, Dior Homme, Celine, Number (N)ine, Yohji Yamamoto and Hermès. It buys collections worldwide and takes mail order on +81-3-5428-3787. Dealer prices track the global archive market; nobody leaves with a find.

When to go, and what to check first

Weekday openings, in order: Dover Street Market Ginza at 11:00 before Ginza fills, then Harajuku, where CANNABIS does not raise its shutter until 13:00 and the hours before it belong to Laforet. Weekend afternoons Chuo-dori closes to cars, reason enough to go or to stay home.

Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo runs 31 August to 5 September 2026 out of Shibuya Hikarie, by invitation. The pavement on Aoyama-dori outside is not, and Vogue photographs it every season. September runs 27 to 32°C with typhoon rain, the uniforms flip to autumn cloth on 1 October by calendar rather than thermometer, and proper coats wait for November. Two checks before any train ride. Search the hours in Japanese, shop name plus 営業時間, because the English listings are the stale ones and one famous address here is still listed as trading after demolition.
