PLATE No. CCCXCVII

Vintage shopping in Tokyo beats new prices at home: used Pleats Please had a median of 27,390 yen at 2nd Street. That is about CAD 244 at the Bank of Canada rate, and the same label starts at CAD 425 new in Canada.

Vintages in stock now, the kind this note is about

Rick Owens, Chrome Hearts, Kith and more, from the boutiques on within.

I read 2nd Street's online store for six Japanese labels on 8 November 2026. I took the newest 60 listings of each, because a median is fairer than a single good find. In November the newest listings lean to coats and jackets, so read this as a coat price.

Quick facts

The last column is new or nearly new stock at boutiques on within, most of it at WDLT117 on St Thomas Street. Homme Plissé starts at CAD 299 there and Pleats Please at CAD 425.

These labels are not new, which is why so much old stock exists: Comme des Garçons dates from 1969, Undercover from 1990 and Pleats Please from 1993.

Pleats are the clear win. A used Pleats Please coat in Tokyo at about CAD 244 costs less than the cheapest new item at home, and pleats fold flat in a suitcase. Undercover is closer to a fair trade, because the new shelf here goes all the way down to a CAD 199 tee.

The median used Pleats Please in Tokyo costs less than the cheapest new one at home.

Where to go

Our Tokyo vintage list has 11 shops, with addresses and hours. For high end used, go to Omotesando and Aoyama.

Laila Vintage at 5-46-2 Jingumae opens every day from 12:00 to 19:30. AMORE Vintage at 3-9-1 Kita-Aoyama opens every day from 10:00 to 20:00. In Ginza, Gallery Rare at 5-5-9 Ginza deals in Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

Most of the used designer sits inside the big chains, and that is where the low prices are. 2nd Street's online store grades every item A to D, so you know what you are buying before you walk in. Grade B is the sweet spot on that list.

Ragtag is the name you will see next, but check before you plan around it. On 30 October 2026 the company that runs it said its servers had been broken into and that its online shop was closed, with no date to reopen. The stores were still buying and selling as normal.

What to do about the tax and the suitcase

Japan changed its tax free rule on 1 November 2026. You now pay the whole price in the shop and collect the tax after customs confirms the goods have left. The Japan buying note has the steps, and you should ask a shop if it is registered before you count on the refund.

Remember the limit when you land. After seven days away Canada lets you bring back CAD 800 of goods free.

If you would rather stay home, used Japanese labels are on Canadian shelves too. A pre owned Kapital Souvenir track pant is CAD 250 at Utopia in Yorkville, and our note on archive fashion explains what you are looking for.

Common questions

What does vintage mean in Japan?

In the Tokyo chains it mostly means second hand, sold with a grade. 2nd Street grades clothes A to D, where A is clean and D is heavily used. In small shops such as Laila Vintage it means older archive clothes.

Where is the best vintage shopping in Tokyo?

For designer, Omotesando and Aoyama for the high end, and the 2nd Street chain for the low prices. Our directory lists 11 vintage shops with addresses and hours.

Are used designer clothes cheaper in Japan?

For the labels I priced, yes. The median used Pleats Please at 2nd Street was 27,390 yen on 8 November 2026. That is about CAD 244, against CAD 425 for the cheapest new item at a Canadian boutique.
