PLATE No. CCCLXXXIX

Buy what Japan makes best: a Porter bag from CAD 395 or Issey Miyake pleats from CAD 299. Other lists cover snacks, chopsticks and cough medicine, which you eat or put on a shelf, so this note covers what you wear. Since 1 November 2026 you pay full price at the till, and the 10 percent tax comes back only after customs confirms your goods are leaving Japan.

That change decides how you shop. Put anything you plan to wear or give away on its own receipt, because one missing item cancels the refund on that whole receipt.

The 237 items made in Japan on within give you a Canadian dollar price for the same labels. About 112 yen is one Canadian dollar, so that is the sum to do.

Quick facts

  • On within: 237 listings say Made in Japan, read 8 November 2026.
  • New tax rule: Since 1 November 2026, pay full price at the till and get the 10 percent consumption tax back after customs.
  • Minimum spend: 5,000 yen or more before tax at one store on one day, with customs confirmation within 90 days.
  • Yen to CAD: 110,000 yen, about CAD 980, holds 10,000 yen of tax, about CAD 89, at the 6 November 2026 Bank of Canada rate.
  • Porter: 13 items from CAD 150 to CAD 895, with 12 marked Made in Japan.
  • Issey Miyake: 77 Homme Plissé items from CAD 299 to CAD 2,650, median CAD 750, and 20 Pleats Please from CAD 425 to CAD 1,150.

Bags: Porter first

Yoshida, the maker of Porter, was founded in 1935, and 12 of the 13 Porter items on within say Made in Japan. So this is the bag to buy there, in a Yoshida shop or a department store.

The number to beat is at Due West on 431 Queen Street West in Toronto. The navy Porter Unit Waist Bag is CAD 395 and the black Porter Force 2Way Duffle Bag is CAD 895. Divide the Tokyo tag by 112, and if the two are close, buy the one you can return.

Pleats: buy them where they are made

Issey Miyake set up his design studio in Tokyo in 1970, adding Pleats Please Issey Miyake in 1993 and Homme Plissé Issey Miyake in 2013. The clothes are cut and sewn first and pleated after, in a heat press, so the pleats stay in. Issey Miyake's own page lists the pleats as wrinkle resistant, quick drying and light, which is why they travel well in a suitcase.

WDLT117 at 7 St Thomas Street in Yorkville, Toronto carries 77 Homme Plissé items from CAD 299 to CAD 2,650.

Black Basic Pleated Straight Leg Pants cost CAD 660 in sizes 1 and 3, about 74,000 yen at that rate. A Tokyo tag well under that is worth carrying home. Pleats Please starts at CAD 425 for a black Basic Pleated Pullover.

Try them on, because sizes on these labels are numbers, not letters. If you buy only one thing in Japan, buy these pleats, because they are made there and they pack flat.

Denim and the labels people carry home

Kapital has been a company since March 1985, based at Kojima in Kurashiki, Okayama. Utopia in Yorkville has a green Kapital Bandana Bucket Hat at CAD 200, and dark wash Kapital 14oz Slim Fit Denim Jeans in size 30 at CAD 400. Our guide on where to buy Kapital lists the other shops.

Jun Takahashi started Undercover in 1990 while a student at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. Its sizes run 1 to 5, so read our Undercover note before you buy. Mitsuru Nishizaki cut patterns at Y's and Yohji Yamamoto for seven years, then started UJOH in 2009, and our guide to Japanese designer brands covers the rest.

To plan the route, start with our Tokyo boutiques list, then the Daikanyama walk or the walk through Japanese designers in Tokyo.

The new tax rule, and why one receipt matters

Until October 2026 visitors bought tax free at the till. Since 1 November 2026 you pay the full price, and the tax comes back after customs confirms the goods are leaving.

A 110,000 yen bag holds 10,000 yen of tax, about CAD 89, which comes back later. To qualify you need at least 5,000 yen before tax at one store on one day.

Before you check in, take your passport and every tax free item to the kiosk at the airport or seaport. You have 90 days from the purchase date, and you cannot do it after your bags are checked. A Green Result means you are done, and a Red Result means customs inspects the goods.

At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha you can use Visit Japan Web on the departure lobby wireless instead. Each shop chooses how the money comes back, so ask before you pay: it may be a bank transfer, a credit card, an app or cash at the departure port.

Customs checks per receipt, so one missing item cancels the refund on that whole receipt. A 3,000 yen gift on the same receipt as that bag puts the refund on the bag at risk if you give it away before you fly.

Put what you will wear on the flight on its own receipt.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to shop for clothes in Japan?

Sometimes, and only if you do the sum. Divide the yen tag by about 112 and compare it with the Canadian price here, such as CAD 395 for the Porter Unit Waist Bag. The 10 percent tax helps, but if the gap is small, buy it where you can return it.

What are the rules for tax free shopping in Japan?

Since 1 November 2026, spend 5,000 yen or more before tax at one store in one day, pay the full price, and claim the 10 percent refund after customs. You have 90 days from the purchase date to show your passport and the goods at a kiosk at the airport or seaport.

Do I need to show my tax free items at the airport in Japan?

Yes, take every tax free item to the kiosk before you check your bags, because airlines cannot hand checked luggage back for this. Show your passport at the kiosk, or use Visit Japan Web at airports such as Narita and Haneda, and a Red Result means customs looks at the goods.
