What is archive fashion? Ask for the season, not the word
Archive fashion means a designer's past work that still matters, like a 2001 Raf Simons bomber; more than 38,000 Grailed listings now use the word.

Archive fashion means a designer's past work that still matters, like the 2001 Raf Simons bomber that Drake and Ye both wore. Grailed's Scott Santiago puts it in one line: archival "denotes the importance of the design or of the era that it came from."
The word has travelled a long way from that bomber. Sydney Sweeney's Versace dress was "archival", and Banana Republic has an "archive" collection of its Reagan era T-shirts. By October 2025, The New York Times counted more than 38,000 Grailed listings using the word.
So the word sells more than it describes. Ask which season instead, because a collection name and a year can be checked and an adjective cannot.
Quick facts
- The definition: a past design that matters for itself or its era, per Grailed in 2025
- On Grailed: more than 38,000 listings use the word, per The New York Times in October 2025
- The top end: around US$50,000 asked for a 2001 Raf Simons camo bomber
- Not archive: a 2010 Linkin Park tour T-shirt, US$35 on eBay
- On within: 1,163 pre owned pieces, $50 to $21,000 CAD, read 27 September 2026

The pieces that changed a direction
The strongest claim to the word belongs to a piece that moved fashion somewhere new. The Times named two: a Dior Homme shrunken suit, and an original nylon Prada bag from the 2000s.
Raf Simons is the case nobody argues with. His 2001 camo bomber, drenched in haphazard patches, was listed on Grailed for around US$50,000. A 2005 Raf Simons parka asked US$20,000 as "archival", while another seller used the same word for a US$49 Stussy T-shirt.
To a museum, the word means something else. "It's a peculiar use of that term," said Valerie Steele, who runs The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The collections everyone agrees on
Some seasons carry the word whole. The tattoo tops from Jean Paul Gaultier's 1995 collection qualify, and so does almost anything from Martin Margiela's years designing for Hermès.
The plainest version comes from Kerry Bonnell, who started an archive business in Austin in 2006: "When I would say collectible design, I think people are just saying archival now." Think of a skeleton print Alexander McQueen minidress from 2009, listed at US$6,800.
Age alone is never enough. Ask the dealer Cole Reagin about a 2010 Linkin Park tour T-shirt and the verdict is two words, "Not archive." One was on eBay for US$35.
The Japanese camp
Japanese labels are a camp of their own, and a Paris shop sells 30 year old Comme des Garçons jackets. Undercover shows why the dates matter. Jun Takahashi started it in 1990 while still a student at Bunka Fashion College, showed his first collection in Tokyo in 1994 and reached Paris in 2002.
Issey Miyake's Pleats Please became a label of its own from the spring 1994 season. The craft is in the order: each garment is sewn to its finished shape first and pleated after.
WDLT117 in Yorkville carries 55 Undercover pieces from $70 and 22 Pleats Please pieces from $425 (today's stock, and tomorrow's archive if the seasons hold up).

The logo years, now archive
A logo becomes archive once the partnership ends. Louis Vuitton showed Takashi Murakami's Multicolore monogram, 33 colours on white or black canvas, at its spring 2003 show, and it made over $300 million in a year. The label ended it in 2015, WWD reports, and reissued it on 1 January 2025, which is why the date on a bag now matters.
Pre owned designer pieces in Yorkville include a Murakami Multicolore Claudia shoulder bag at $1,500. A lightly used pink LV Trainer by Virgil Abloh, titled SS21, asks $1,200 on the same shelf. Ask whether a Multicolore bag comes from the first run or the reissue before paying for either.
The word is free to type. The season is what you are paying for.
How to shop it without paying for the word
Ask for the season first: the collection name and the year, then check them against the label's own record. Read "vintage" in a title as an era, not a condition, and look for the grade the seller writes (pre owned, lightly used or worn once).
Ask for photographs of every flaw and read the return policy before paying. The shop holding the pieces above ships abroad in 7 to 10 business days, and every sale is final.
Then run the price test: "The more niche something is, the harder it is to actually sell," the reseller Luke Fracher told The Times. A word in the title is no reason to pay more. The first checks for vintage designer cover the label, the hardware, the construction and the condition.
The collector is buying proof of knowledge. Reagin said an old Louis Vuitton jacket "can look a lot more cultured than just being a rich kid," and the season on the label is what proves it.
Common questions
What is considered archive fashion?
A piece is considered archive when it comes from a designer's past collection and matters for its design or its era, by Grailed's definition. The 2001 Raf Simons bomber qualifies, and a 2010 Linkin Park tour T-shirt does not.
Is archive fashion expensive?
Archive fashion runs from US$49 to around US$50,000 in the Grailed listings The New York Times found, so the word alone tells you nothing about price. An Hermès dress from 1999 was listed on eBay at $3,090.
Is Rick Owens archive fashion?
Rick Owens is archive fashion when the piece carries a named past season, like the pre owned FW16 Mastodon cargo pants asking $500 on used Rick Owens. Those 14 used pieces ask a median of $650, against $1,000 for all Rick Owens on the shelf.
What is Japanese archive fashion?
Japanese archive fashion means past seasons from labels like Comme des Garçons, Undercover and Issey Miyake. Undercover showed its first collection in Tokyo in 1994, the same year Pleats Please became a label of its own.
