Why is Louis Vuitton so expensive? Craft is only the floor

Louis Vuitton is so expensive because of the name: LVMH's fashion and leather goods group kept about 34 cents a euro, and graded pieces ask a median $900.

Louis Vuitton is so expensive because the name sells: its side of LVMH kept about 34 cents per euro as profit. That is the fashion and leather goods group's figure for the first half of 2026. It is not Louis Vuitton's alone.

Louis Vuitton, on the shelf.

A Reddit thread on Louis Vuitton is titled "Teacher said LV is for poor people who want to look rich". With respect to the teacher, the cheapest graded bag at one resale shop asks $900.

Craft is real and sets the floor. The name sets the rest, even on a second sale.

Quick facts

  • On within: every Louis Vuitton piece in stock, 74 at Utopia in Toronto, $100 to $3,500 Canadian, median $1,000, read 9 October 2026.
  • Graded by the shop: 53 of the 74, median $900.
  • Marked down: none of the 74.
  • LVMH fashion and leather goods: €6,195 million of profit from recurring operations on €18,146 million of revenue, about 34%, first half of 2026.
  • Workshops: 17 leather goods workshops in France, an average of 250 operations per leather bag, by LVMH's count.
  • Founded: 1854 in Paris, first store at 4 Rue des Capucines; Monogram canvas in 1896.

The logo against the handwork

In the same half, LVMH as a whole ran a 22.5% operating margin. Fashion and leather goods brought in 47% of LVMH's revenue and 71% of its profit from recurring operations.

Bernard Arnault, who runs LVMH, said on 27 July 2026 that its labels "continued to inspire dreams and enhance their desirability". Desirability is what you pay extra for.

The craft starts in 1854. That year Louis Vuitton opened his first store at 4 Rue des Capucines in Paris.

He and his successors brought in the flat top trunk, lightweight canvas and the tumbler lock, along with the patterns the name is known for. LVMH counts 17 leather goods workshops in France, and an average of 250 operations for one leather bag.

Harrington & Co., an Australian shop that sells Louis Vuitton, wrote on 22 March 2014 that every bag is still sewn by hand. LVMH's own 2014 photo of the Sainte-Florence workshops shows a sewing machine stitching an Alma PM's leather base. The owner's caption wins.

For the traveller, two Keepalls $2,100 apart

Louis Vuitton began with trunks. LVMH's page has an 1888 photo of Louis, Georges and Gaston-Louis Vuitton posing with factory workers, Gaston-Louis lying on a trunk bed. The dearest of the 74 is a pre owned Horizon 55 suitcase in Monogram Eclipse canvas at $3,500, and a brown Discovery Backpack, lightly pre owned, asks $2,500.

For $3,000 you get the Keepall Bandouliere 55 in Damier Graphite, lightly used and noted "Comes As Is". The yellow Epi Keepall 55, graded pre owned, comes in at $900, the last one in stock.

Same name, same size, $2,100 apart. Line and grade set the second price.

For the Monogram, a canvas that turned 130

The Monogram canvas dates from 1896. Georges Louis Vuitton made it as a tribute to his father. One line in the teacher thread says canvas bags made Louis Vuitton entry level luxury for years.

A pre owned Claudia MM in Takashi Murakami's Multicolore Monogram is $1,500. The Murakami Toiletry Pouch 19 costs $1,600 with its original packaging but no grade.

Nigo's Brazza wallet in brown Damier Ebene Giant is $1,000 (a cheaper way into a collaboration).

Stitching explains the floor. The name explains everything above it, even the second time around.

For sneakers, a middle price of $1,200

Sneakers are 28 of the 74 pieces. They run $400 to $2,000, with a median of $1,200. Graded bags start at $900, so shoes are the cheaper way in.

At $1,500, Virgil Abloh's Upcycle Soho Exclusive LV Trainer in black and grey is graded pre owned. The pair is LV size 10, US 11 to 11.5.

Before you pay

A piece with no grade is ungraded, not new, and 21 of the 74 state no condition. The graded ones sit under pre owned Louis Vuitton; what pre owned means explains the words.

Every sale at Utopia is final. Its pre owned listings show any flaws in photos. You can collect in person at 132 Cumberland Street any day between noon and 8pm.

If you live farther away, the shop ships from Toronto to the US and worldwide. Anything sent abroad takes 7 to 10 business days to arrive.

Shipping is free to Canada and the US once an order is over $300, about US$210. A Canadian order pays no import duty.

From the US, read duty on clothes into the US first. At the Bank of Canada rate for 9 October 2026, $900 is about US$631. The $1,000 median is about US$701 and the $3,500 suitcase about US$2,453.

Common questions

Is Louis Vuitton really worth the price?

Yes, if worth means holding a price: 53 graded pieces ask a median of $900 against $1,000 for all 74. That does not prove one bag is well made; judge each by its photos and Louis Vuitton prices by category.

What is so special about Louis Vuitton?

Its making and its history, by LVMH's own page: an average of 250 operations per leather bag. Founded in Paris in 1854, it brought in the flat top trunk and the tumbler lock.

Are vintage Louis Vuitton bags valuable?

Used ones ask real money: graded bags run from $900 for a yellow Epi Keepall 55 to $3,500 for a Horizon 55. The shop grades them pre owned or lightly used and gives no age. Ask any label you love two things: what its owner keeps, and what it asks the second time.
