Is Louis Vuitton cheaper in Paris? 7 bags priced both ways

The gap moves from bag to bag. I read seven bags on both of Louis Vuitton's websites, and France was 3.5 to 12.9 percent cheaper. That is well short of the 20 to 30 percent you'll see repeated online.

The refund and the border do the rest of the work, so I did those sums too.

Seven bags, two prices

These are Louis Vuitton's own prices on its French and Canadian sites, read the same day. The French price in dollars uses the Bank of Canada rate above, so the last column is what the sticker saves before any refund.

Louis Vuitton started in Paris in 1854 and launched its Monogram canvas in 1896, and all seven of these bags are Monogram in one form or another. That is why it is a fair sample.

The canvas Neverfull is the one worth carrying home. The Keepall is the one I would leave. CAD 132 is not much on a CAD 3,750 bag once you count the trip home.

The sticker gap is real, but it is 5 percent on most of these bags, not 30.

What the refund really adds

French VAT is 20 percent, but it is charged on the price before tax. So it is at most 16.7 percent of the sticker: 1,550 euros holds 258 euros of tax. You will not get all of that back, because the operator takes a cut.

At 12 percent the Neverfull drops to 1,364 euros, about CAD 2,146. That is 23 percent under the Canadian sticker, which is where the gap finally reaches the number people quote. Check the slip before you pay, because I could not find Louis Vuitton's own rate published.

What you owe at the Canadian border

After a trip of 48 hours or more, the Canada Border Services Agency lets you bring in CAD 800 of goods free, per person. Above that you pay GST or HST, and duty on the rest.

Duty on a leather handbag is 10 percent at the general rate, and free if the bag qualifies as made in the EU under CETA. The heat stamp inside the bag says which country made it, so check it before you claim the free rate. The first CAD 300 over the exemption is charged at 7 percent duty.

Take the Neverfull after the refund, CAD 2,146, in Ontario after a week away, and CAD 1,346 of it is over the exemption. If it comes in duty free you owe 13 percent HST, CAD 175, for CAD 2,321 in all.

At the general rate the duty is CAD 126 and the HST CAD 191, for CAD 2,463. Both land under the Canadian sticker of CAD 2,800, and the duty note explains how the border charges tax on top of duty.

Louis Vuitton's Canadian site is not the only price here. All 69 Louis Vuitton items on within are at Utopia, 132 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, and most are used.

A Keepall 55 in yellow Epi leather, pre owned, is CAD 900, against CAD 3,750 for a new canvas Keepall Bandoulière 55. A used Avenue Slingbag PM is CAD 1,500.

What I would do is plain. Buy the canvas Neverfull new in Paris if you are already going. Skip the flight for a Keepall and buy a used one at home, because the sticker saves you only CAD 132 on a new one.
