What to wear to Paris Fashion Week, September 28 to October 6

Paris Fashion Week runs September 28 to October 6 this year, and the honest first sentence is that you will not be in the room. The FHCM calendar carries 68 shows and 33 presentations of womenswear for spring and summer 2027, every one of them accreditation only: press, buyers, clients. No public ticket exists.

What is yours is everything outside the doors, which is most of the week: gravel at the Tuileries, the steps of the Palais de Tokyo, the Carreau du Temple, the Marais between shows. The pavement has no guest list.

What the week opens to a civilian

L'Oréal Paris stages Le Défilé on September 28 at nine in the evening, the one mass audience spectacle on the official program: broadcast wide, with limited public places through L'Oréal's promotions. FHCM livestreams calendar shows online. SPHERE, the showroom at the Palais de Tokyo, runs September 30 to October 6 for the trade, and its digital edition opens to anyone the same dates through The New Black. Then the retail week, which residents use and visitors miss: windows staged for the fortnight, in store activations, sample sales announced on Instagram days out.

Debuts are the season's storyline. Drew Henry shows a first collection for Courrèges on September 30, Kai Nesselrath a first for Carven on October 1.

The invited wear one loud thing

Clothes get photographed twice at a show: on the pavement before the doors, and seated inside, where you exist from the waist up. The top half carries the argument, which is why a block colour, a satin shoulder or chunky jewellery beats a complicated hem. 2026 is running loud after years of the opposite, all volume and feathers and colour that refuses to apologise, and the error is taking three at once. Take one, over the counter current the same season produced: cigarette cut jeans, a funnel neck jacket.

Shoes decide the day. The Tuileries is gravel, the Marais is cobbles, a fine heel sinks into both. Chocolate brown suede is the season's material story, on loafers and on the knee high boots that walked nearly every autumn runway, and suede is precisely what a September rain band ruins.

LECLAIREUR (Sévigné) at 40 rue de Sévigné hangs Rick Owens, Sacai, The Row and Ann Demeulemeester. Armand Hadida built the room in 2009 with the artist Arne Quinze, entirely from recycled materials: 147 screens, walls inside walls. Dim, theatrical, top of the market, and the wrong door for a quiet classic dresser.

The sidewalk is the longer job

Outside, the camera sits at pavement height and moves, so it reads silhouette and colour. Leopard has become the season's neutral rather than its exclamation, and polka dots went severe, oversized and black on white. Colour is the cheapest trend to adopt, so take the drift toward lilac in a scarf.

Dover Street Market Paris at 35 to 37 rue des Francs-Bourgeois moved the street's gravity when it opened. The courtyard stages a full Comme des Garçons installation before you reach a till, and the doors open Sunday from noon to seven. It is the chain Comme des Garçons owns rather than a Paris independent, and still the best hour on the walk.

The Broken Arm at 12 rue Perrée has hung Maison Margiela and Lemaire at full run since Anaïs Lafarge, Romain Joste and Guillaume Steinmetz opened it in 2013, and it is half café: the counter facing Square du Temple pours from nine. Dark Sunday and Monday, the wrong anchor for fashion week's one Sunday.

Anatomica at 14 rue du Bourg-Tibourg cuts its own trousers and tailoring. Sunday hours are three to seven exactly, Monday to Saturday eleven to seven. Monastic, fit first, and no use to a trend shopper. More of that walk sits in the Marais guide.

After the last show

Evening this fortnight is satin and volume and one piece of jewellery large enough to be the point. White bIRD, opened by Stéphanie Roger in 2010 at 38 rue du Mont Thabor and now three rooms, carries more than fifty independent jewellery designers: Sophie Bille Brahe, Fernando Jorge, Sophie Buhai. Roger's own line: pieces one cherishes for a lifetime, not a season.

Didier Ludot keeps vintage haute couture at 24 galerie de Montpensier under the Palais Royal arcades, fifty years there as of 2025: Chanel suits, Saint Laurent dresses, Courrèges, Hermès bags, with the little black dress annex across the garden at 125 galerie de Valois. Ludot is a certified CEA expert who dates and authenticates twentieth century couture. Prices are collector prices, so a visit is usually a masterclass, though buying a 1960s Courrèges the week a new Courrèges debuts is a joke worth the money.

Nobody photographs a guest list; they photograph a coat crossing the Tuileries gravel.

Late September, and then the turn

September in Paris sits between 12 and 21 degrees, with long amber evenings, and a jacket earns itself only after dark. The week crosses into October, which turns for real: 8 to 16 degrees, more grey and rain days each week, wind funnelling down the boulevards. Rain bands pass rather than settle, so a small umbrella beats a heavy coat, and a knit under a coat with a scarf outperforms down.

Before you hand over a card

The one Sunday inside the week is October 4, and the Marais is the quarter that trades it, on windows that never line up: Dover Street Market from noon to seven, Anatomica three to seven, The Broken Arm shut. The buying led rooms hide north of the flagship traffic.

On the left bank, Beige Habilleur is at 86 rue Bonaparte, Monday to Saturday, and Yelp still lists its old rue Chardon Lagache address, an easy wasted walk in the 6e. It stocks A.Presse, Cohérence and Ring Jacket, and commissions its own: J.M. Weston for BEIGE, Lavabre Cadet for BEIGE. Centre Commercial at 2 rue de Marseille sells Studio Nicholson and Paraboot at contemporary prices, opened in 2010 by Veja's founders Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion.
