What does pre owned mean? Used, in the seller's words

Pre owned means used, the same thing second hand has meant for clothes since the 1650s. Somebody owned the piece before you, whether or not they ever wore it.

The newer word is a seller's word. Etymonline dates it to 1961, of cars, in American English, and calls it "a euphemism for used".

So read the grade, not the word. Pre owned tells you there was an owner; only the grade says how the piece was treated.

Four words for one thing

Used is the oldest of them: it has meant second hand since the 1590s. Second hand followed in the 1650s, "especially of clothes", from the older phrase at second hand, meaning from a previous owner.

Pre owned came off the car lot, and it is older than it sounds. Merriam-Webster's first known use is 1934.

Pre loved is the gentlest of the four. Cambridge says it is used especially when selling something, to avoid the words second hand. All four mean one thing: somebody had it first.

The grades that do the work

The RealReal files every piece under 6 grades, and its top one, Pristine, means new, sometimes with tags, a dust bag or a box. Excellent means tried on or lightly worn. Very Good shows light fading, Good moderate creasing, and Fair heavy wear, down to seam splitting.

As Is may need repair: broken hardware, a small hole, a tear. Every piece still has to be clean and wearable to be listed at all.

eBay did the same for clothes in 2025. Until mid February, a seller could pick only Pre owned; now it is Excellent, Good or Fair, and Fair allows "significantly visible flaws".

The two boutiques on the resale index write their own three: pre owned, lightly used and worn once.

Where the words part ways

Refurbished is an electronics word: on eBay it means professionally refurbished, inspected and cleaned by a qualified seller. Certified pre owned is a car word, for a vehicle that has met its maker's age, mileage and inspection rules.

Deadstock is the opposite of pre owned, stock that never sold, and what deadstock means covers DS and VNDS. Vintage names an era or a wash rather than a grade, and the index leaves it out of the count.

Pre owned tells you there was an owner; the grade tells you what they did.

What to check on a pre owned listing

Find the grade, then find who wrote it. A grade from the shop that holds the piece tells you more than a word in a title.

Hold the photos against the grade. (Utopia, for one, photographs every flaw on a pre owned piece, and takes no returns.)

Look for what comes with it: tags, box, dust bag, authenticity card. At The RealReal, the description names them when they are there. Then read the return rule for that grade, because an As Is piece there cannot come back.

A missing grade is not a promise of new. On the index, 3,249 of 4,629 pieces state no condition at all, and the pre owned shelf shows only pieces whose shop wrote one.
