Yes, The RealReal is legit, and in 2019 a Forbes writer said it sold him a $3,600 fake Dior tote. It is a public company with 1,107,000 buyers in the 12 months to 30 June 2026, and it says it physically examines every item.

Legit describes the company, not every listing. So buy a bag there only with its Return Guarantee, because without one a bag is final sale.

The checks are real, and so are the misses. Chanel's suit over counterfeits and advertising, filed in November 2018, was still open when the company reported on 6 August 2026.

How it checks

Every consigned piece goes through one of its authentication centres, over 1 million items a month by its own count. TRR Shield flags the brands and styles most likely to be fake as they arrive. TRR Vision photographs every angle at microscopic scale and sets the pictures against millions of others.

For metal, an XRF machine reads the exact alloy in jewellery, watches and hardware. Behind all of it sit 13 years of records on over 37 million authentic items and over 250,000 fakes.

The brands play no part. Its terms say the check is done in house, and that the labels it sells are not partners.

What the reporting found

The company went public on 28 June 2019. That day its founder, Julie Wainwright, told CNBC that "every single item has already been inspected, authenticated before it gets on the site." That October, the Forbes contributor Richard Kestenbaum wrote that he had spent over $3,600 on a Toile de Jouy Dior Book Tote there that was fake.

On 5 November 2019, CNBC reported that an internal chart from 2018 had copywriters checking some categories, Hermès garments and Gucci belts among them. All Chanel, the same chart showed, went to the authentication team. The copywriters told CNBC they had little training in spotting fakes.

The company answered that it takes possession of every item and physically evaluates each one, and that authentication is "both an art and science". It said it would refund an item whose authenticity was in question.

What to buy there

For a bag, the rule is short: it is final sale unless you buy the Return Guarantee. The company's own filing says AI and microphotography help it check high end handbags. The Forbes tote is the reason to pay for a way back anyway.

For jewellery and watches, gemologists and horologists inspect each piece, and every one sold comes with an authentication certificate, by the company's own filing. That paper is the thing to keep.

For clothes and shoes, the 14 day window applies unless the piece is swimwear, sold at 40% off or more, or was graded As Is. Read the grade first: Pristine means new, and As Is means it may need repair.

Legit describes a company; authentic describes one bag at a time.
