Is Depop legit? Protection covers 3 countries, not Canada

Depop is a real marketplace, but Depop Protection covers buyers in the UK, US and Australia only, and nothing on Depop says it authenticates items.

PLATE No. CXI

Depop is a real marketplace, and its buyer cover is not. Depop Protection reaches buyers in 3 countries: the UK, the US and Australia. Canada is not one of them.

Quick facts

  • Countries Depop Protection covers: 3, the UK, the US and Australia, read 20 September 2026
  • Time to report a problem: 30 days from the date of purchase
  • Buyer fee: up to 5 per cent plus up to 1 pound or dollar, in the UK and US only
  • Seller fee outside those three countries: 10 per cent, plus the PayPal charge
  • Items Depop authenticates: 0 stated anywhere in its help centre
  • Pre owned pieces on within, priced by a named shop: 1,170, median CAD 350

For a comparison priced by a named shop, the Toronto shelf carries 1,170 pre owned pieces, and the Depop Canada note works the fees for a Canadian order.

What Depop Protection actually covers

Three situations, in Depop's own words: the item does not arrive, it arrives damaged, or it is "significantly not as described".

You get a full refund if you report inside 30 days of purchase. The cover extends to the purchase price, the shipping, the fees and any taxes or duties.

Depop is blunt about what this is. Its help page says the scheme "is not an insurance policy, a warranty, or a guarantee".

The conditions that switch it off

You have to check out on Depop and pay with Depop Payments. Pay any other way and the cover is gone.

Named exclusions: a direct money transfer outside the app or website, including PayPal, Venmo or a bank transfer. Agreeing to meet the seller in person also ends it.

And the geography. The help page lists the UK, the US and Australia. A Canadian buyer is outside the scheme, and the buyer fee article scopes itself to the UK and US too, so what a Canadian is charged is not published.

What is not a refund

Depop lists eight grounds for a claim. Lost and damaged items, wrong sizes, wrong colours and counterfeits. Then severe damage, major flaws left out of the listing, wrong items and missing pieces in a bundle.

Then the other list, which is shorter and costlier. Smells, minor damage on second hand or vintage pieces, material that looks different to the photos, and poor fit.

Change of mind is the costly one. Depop says plainly that a seller does not have to refund you for it.

Nothing in Depop's help centre says it authenticates anything. A counterfeit is a claim, not a check.

The fees, by where you are

Sellers in the UK, the US and Australia pay no Depop selling fee. They pay card processing instead.

In the UK that is 2.9 per cent plus 30p, in the US 3.3 per cent plus 45 cents. Australia pays 2.6 per cent plus 30 cents.

Sellers anywhere else pay 10 per cent on every sale, plus PayPal's own charge. Boosted listings run 12 per cent in the UK and US from 23 March 2026, and 8 per cent elsewhere.

Those fees land in the asking price. A seller outside the three countries is pricing a 10 per cent cut into what you pay.

What within counts instead

On 20 September 2026, 1,170 pre owned pieces were live on within's Toronto shelves, CAD 50 to CAD 21,000, median CAD 350.

Every one is held by a named shop that bought it, photographed it and priced it. Sneakers were 577 of them at a CAD 300 median. within does not authenticate pieces, and the shop that sells one answers for it.

Before you buy

Screenshot the listing before you pay, including the damage photos and the measurements. That is your evidence if the parcel does not match.

Keep every question inside the order conversation so the replies are findable later. Then check where the seller is, because that decides both the fee in the price and whether you have cover at all. Our Depop Canada note works the numbers for a Canadian order.

Common questions

is depop legit

Depop is a real marketplace, but Depop Protection only covers buyers in the UK, the US and Australia, read 20 September 2026. Canada is not on that list. Depop's help centre states nowhere that it authenticates items, so a counterfeit is something you claim a refund for after the fact.

depop package

If a package never arrives, Depop Protection refunds the full price, shipping, fees and taxes. You have to report it within 30 days of purchase and to have paid through Depop Payments on Depop. That cover applies to buyers in the UK, the US and Australia only, and paying outside the app ends it.

depop vintage clothing

Depop will not refund you for smells, minor damage on second hand or vintage pieces, or material that looks different from the photos. Those three are listed as not covered. For comparison, 1,170 pre owned pieces on within's Toronto shelves ran CAD 50 to CAD 21,000 on 20 September 2026, median CAD 350.
