Is Poshmark legit? Yes, but under $500 you are the check

Poshmark drew its line on 4 December 2014, when it counted over 17,000 Chanel items in 8,000 closets. That day it launched a free authentication service for designer orders over $500, now called Posh Authenticate. The line is still $500 in the US, and C$700 in Canada.

Under the line, its buyer policy says it "does not physically evaluate items listed for sale". So you are the check, in the 72 hours after delivery.

Most designer pieces sit below that mark. Across five independent boutiques within lists, 6,159 of 7,957 pieces cost less than C$700. The pre owned designer pieces are part of that count.

The listing and the badge

Say a designer handbag lists at $480. It ships directly from the seller, leaving nobody at Poshmark to handle the box. Priced at $520, an eligible bag earns an "Authentication Included" badge, making that $40 gap the entire difference in who checks it.

Poshmark began in 2011 as an app for people to sell to each other, inspired by the iPhone 4. Naver has owned it since 5 January 2023, when its stock left the Nasdaq. The platform reports 130 million members and 350 million items sold, but the contract remains between buyer and seller.

Counterfeit items are prohibited. That ban extends to any listing described as inspired by Chanel.

When the bag costs $500 or more

On 4 December 2014 Poshmark launched Posh Concierge, free authentication for orders over $500, checked within 24 to 48 hours. Its own example of the fee was a Chanel classic flap listed at $4,500 that would leave the seller $3,600. Dani Greene, a seller quoted in the same release, said she liked being able to control her prices.

Branded as Posh Authenticate, the service covers select luxury items at $500 or more in the US and C$700 or more in Canada. Specialists examine logos, tags, and overall quality in 1 to 3 business days once the box arrives. Failed items trigger a full buyer refund.

The fine print sets strict limits. Company authenticators are not certified by or affiliated with any brand. Poshmark terms state that the process cannot provide an absolute guarantee, making a Posh Protect refund the buyer's sole remedy.

When the parcel lands at your door

A courier delivers the parcel, and the 72 hour timer begins immediately from the delivery scan. With no case after 3 days, Poshmark releases payment to the seller.

Posh Protect covers five delivery problems: undisclosed damage, an incorrect or missing item, an inaccurate description, counterfeit goods, or an order never received. Check the tags, the codes and the stitching against the listing photos before you tap accept. Disputes require an in app report with photographs (an email to support will not open a case).

Accepting the order closes the return window. Approved returns travel back within 5 days on a label Poshmark provides, with the refund issued once the return reaches the seller. Poor fit receives zero cover, with Poshmark advising customers to list the piece again.

The $40 between a $480 bag and a $520 one decides who checks it.

In Canada, the line is C$700

Canadians could first sign up on 29 May 2019, ahead of a beta launch, after Poshmark reached 40 million users in the US, Daily Hive reported that day. Poshmark Canada, Inc. operates out of Vancouver. Its buyer protection uses the exact same Posh Protect language found in the American terms.

Physical authentication begins at C$700 in Canada. Sellers pay a flat C$3.95 fee on orders under C$20, and 20 percent on sales of C$20 or more. Poshmark deducts GST or HST on that fee directly from seller earnings.

Canada Post and Purolator labels handle boxes up to 2.5 kilograms, compared to 5 pounds via USPS in the United States.

For a piece with a shop behind it

On a shelf at 132 Cumberland Street sit 74 pieces of Louis Vuitton at Utopia, $100 to $3,500 in Canadian dollars, 23 of them under C$700. The five boutiques within lists are all in Toronto. Stock includes Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Nike, but zero pieces from Coach, Michael Kors, lululemon athletica, or PINK Victoria's Secret.

Utopia states that all products sold are 100 percent authentic, photographs flaws on pre owned pieces, and treats every sale as final. within does not authenticate pieces. The shop named at checkout sells the piece and sets the return terms, as how returns work explains.

The Cumberland Street shop ships to the United States in 7 to 10 business days after 1 to 2 days of processing, free over $300 in Canadian dollars. Cross border shoppers can review duty on clothes shipped to the US to estimate import costs. Before you pay

Keep all communication and payments strictly inside the application, because Poshmark terms state that transactions starting on the platform cannot conclude off it. Look for the badge on qualifying listings. Under $500, request clear photographs of tags, date codes, and stitching to conduct the first checks on vintage designer.

Buyers can cancel within 3 hours of purchase, or if the seller has not shipped within 7 days. Open the carton the day it arrives, photograph any discrepancies, and report any dispute in the app within 72 hours before accepting.
