A good leather jacket is the rare purchase that gets better with abuse. Rain, subway shoulders, a decade of wear: the right one absorbs all of it and comes out looking more like yours. The wrong one cracks, sags at the snaps, and teaches an expensive lesson about the word "genuine." This guide is the ten-minute version of that lesson, tuned for shopping it in Toronto.

Read the leather first

The label tells you most of what you need before you ever try it on.

  • Full-grain is the whole hide, scars and all: the strongest cut, and the one that develops real patina. If a jacket is meant to outlive you, it's this.
  • Top-grain has the surface sanded and finished. Slightly weaker, more uniform, still honest. Most good mid-range jackets live here.
  • "Genuine leather" is, counterintuitively, the budget tier: split hide with a coated face. Fine for a trend piece; wrong for a forever piece.
  • Lambskin is butter-soft and light, drapes beautifully, scratches easily. Cowhide and horsehide are stiffer, heavier, and nearly indestructible. Neither is better; they're different jackets.

Weight is information too. A serious jacket has heft, usually somewhere between a heavy sweater and a light regret. Featherweight at a full-grain price deserves questions.

The five fit checks

Leather barely stretches lengthwise but moulds to you over time, so buy the fit you want to end at, not grow into.

  • Shoulders rule everything. The seam sits at the bone's edge, full stop. Tailors can fix almost anything on a leather jacket except this.
  • Snug through the body. You want your bulk in the leather, not air. Layering room for one mid-weight knit, no more.
  • Sleeves end at the wrist bone with your arm hanging; a hidden zip cuff buys a little grace.
  • Zip it and sit down. If it bows open at the chest or rides into your neck, keep looking.
  • Lift your arms. A well-cut jacket moves with you; a cheap one becomes a straitjacket at the third button of a streetcar grab-rail.

Vintage or new

Toronto is a strong city for both. Vintage gets you broken-in hides and prices that undercut new by half or more; Kensington Market has the city's densest racks, and the leather rail is a fixture of every shop in our vintage and consignment guide. Check vintage pieces at the stress points: seams under the arms, the zipper's teeth and tape, cracking at the elbows. Surface scuffs are character; structural dryness is a project.

New gets you the exact cut and a clean start on the patina. The boutique route beats the mall here: independent shops on Queen West and Ossington carry makers who publish what the hide actually is, which is precisely the information the label game hides. Keep it alive

Care is almost embarrassingly simple. Let it dry naturally when it's soaked, never on a radiator. Condition it once or twice a year with a neutral leather balm. Hang it on a wide wooden hanger, not a wire one. Skip the fake-distressing sprays and let the subway do the work; it's faster and free.

Common questions

How much should a good leather jacket cost?

Vintage, expect roughly $100 to $400 in Toronto depending on hide and condition. New and honestly made, real full-grain or lambskin starts around $500 to $700 and climbs with construction. Under $200 new almost always means bonded or split leather: fine knowingly, disappointing accidentally.

Is lambskin too delicate for every day?

No, but it earns its softness. Lambskin handles daily wear fine; what it doesn't forgive is backpack straps and rough edges. If your jacket will live a hard commuter life, cowhide shrugs off what lambskin remembers.

Should a leather jacket fit tight at first?

Snug, not tight. The body and sleeves will relax and mould to you within a season; the shoulders never change. If it's comfortable over a heavy hoodie on day one, it will fit like borrowed outerwear by spring.
