Do New Balance run small? No, and the 530 runs big

One reader won green Aimé Leon Dore 550s. He is a true size 10, and he had entered in that size. Then the doubt set in: should he have gone half a size down?

A rule of thumb said yes, half a size down on 550s and on Made in USA pairs. New Balance's own BB550 page says "Fits As Expected For Most People."

The 530 is the one to size down

New Balance has been independent since 1906, and its 530 page says "most people go down 0.5 US sizes." That is the maker's whole rule. Only one popular model gets a size down from New Balance, the 530, the shoe some guides tell you to size up.

New Balance says the original MR530 paired turn of the millennium looks with a running shoe built for high mileage. It says the reintroduced 530 has a segmented ABZORB midsole under a mesh and synthetic upper. It comes in one width, D.

The 9060 and the 2002R take your usual size

New Balance's 9060 page carries no fit line at all. Under its fit FAQ, that silence means you take your standard size. The shoe draws sway bars from the 990, a tongue logo from the 991 and an outsole pattern from the 860.

On the standard 2002R, the page says "fits as expected for most people." (New Balance lists pigskin among the materials, beside suede and mesh.) That line was read on the standard shoe, not on the Protection Pack or Gore-Tex pairs.

Both models come in D width only. For the 9060, Bricks & Wood in a men's 9 is CAD 600, and Joe Freshgoods' Penny Cookie Pink is pre owned in a 9 at CAD 250. On the 2002R, Driftwood in an 8 is CAD 300, and the Lunar New Year Dusty Lilac in a 9.5 is CAD 350.

The 550 and the 990 against the rule of thumb

New Balance's 550 debuted on basketball courts in 1989, rested in the archives, returned in late 2020 and joined the full time line in 2021. On 9 October 2026, New Balance's US site had no 550 for sale, while its Canadian site priced the leather BB550 at CAD 119.99. That page says "fits as expected for most people."

New Balance says the 990 has changed since 1982, with the 990v4 arriving in 2016. Made in USA pairs carry a domestic value of 70% or more, and the 990v6 page says "fits as expected for most people." That note was read on the v6; the v4 page carries no fit line.

A 550 White Pink Sea Salt from 2022 in a 6.5 is CAD 145. JJJJound's Olive 990v3 in a men's 7 is CAD 600, while Kith's Dusty Mauve 990v4 in a 10.5 is CAD 400. Action Bronson's Untitled 990v6, lightly pre owned, is a men's 12 at CAD 300.

Only one of the five asks you to change your size, and it says down.

Women's sizes, kids' sizes and the letter D

D means Standard on the men's chart and Wide on the women's, where standard width is B. Unisex models come in D only. Women's 990v6 pairs come in four widths: 2A, B, D and 2E.

On the big kid chart, a kids' 4 equals a women's 5.5 and a kids' 7 equals a women's 8.5. The Rose Pink 9060 comes in seven grade school sizes, 4Y to 7Y, at CAD 250, which by that chart is women's 5.5 to 8.5. At parlor23, grade school 550s include White Grey from 2022 in a 7 at CAD 130 and White Black Rain Cloud from 2023 in a 5 at CAD 120.

Before you pay

Try shoes on in the late afternoon when feet are at their largest. Check that your heel fits snug with no slipping, keep room to wiggle your toes, and buy for the larger foot. New Balance notes that people are more than twice as likely to buy a shoe too small than too big.

New pairs from newbalance.com carry a 45 day return window in the US, while Canadian boutique orders offer pickup or delivery without import duty. Get the size right before paying. Common questions

Should you size up or down in New Balance?

Neither, except on the 530 where New Balance notes that most people go down 0.5 US sizes. The 9060, 2002R, 550 and 990v6 take your usual size. New Balance states that its shoes generally align with standard sizing unless flagged on the product page.

Do New Balance run smaller than Nike?

Not by the charts: both makers print 28 against a men's 10, Nike as CM on the box and New Balance under Length. UK numbers part ways, with Nike listing UK 9 and New Balance listing UK 9.5. Neither measurement proves one runs smaller than the other.

Is New Balance wide 2e or 4e?

Both: on New Balance's men's chart, 2E is Wide and 4E is X Wide. Of these five models, only the Made in USA 990v6 comes in those widths. The 9060, 2002R, 550 and 530 sell in standard D width only.

Does the New Balance 9060 run big or small women's?

Neither: the 9060 page carries no fit line, which means you take your usual size. Because it sells in unisex sizing, a women's 8 takes the pair labeled M6.5 / W8. Women's sizes run 1.5 sizes above the men's size across the unisex line.
