What a 38 is, and whether designer shoes run big or small

A European 38 is a UK 5 on every house chart read in August 2026, and either a US women's 7 or a US women's 8 depending on whose chart you read. Maison Margiela and Officine Creative both call that 38 a US 8. VEJA calls it a US 7. A full size of daylight, printed by the houses themselves.

The men's ladders agree. All four put a European 42 at a US 9 and a UK 8. The women's column splits, and no aggregator table says so, because it has to pick one answer and print it as though the houses had voted.

What the charts do not publish

Two of the four print a foot length at all. VEJA gives a European 38 a foot of 24.0 cm. Vagabond gives its 38 a band of 243 to 249 mm. Same size on two boxes, up to nine millimetres of daylight, and neither house sells the half size that would cover it.

Margiela's fourth column looks like a foot and is not one. It reads 25.0 at a 38 and steps half a centimetre for every half size, 21.0 at a 34 through 29.0 at a 42, which is the Japanese ladder rather than a measurement. Officine Creative prints no length at all.

Even the measured column wobbles: VEJA's steps 1.4 cm from the 42 to the 43 and 0.5 cm from the 43 to the 44, while Vagabond's bands move about seven millimetres each the whole way up.

Measure it on paper, standing up

Birkenstock publishes the method and it costs nothing. Stand upright on a sheet of A4 with your heels against the wall, outline the foot in pencil, and mark the longest toe, which on plenty of people is the second one. Its rule for a foot between two sizes is to take the larger, because a foot spreads under load.

Do both feet. Then take the width the way the house says to: mark the outermost point either side of the ball, run a tape underneath, inner edge to outer edge, in millimetres. Birkenstock prints the answer on the box as a footprint, outlined for regular and filled for narrow.

Tricker's does the same job with letters. Its standard men's fitting is an F, which its own size page equates to a US D, and its wider G is a US E.

What the Italian, French and UK numbers count

Italian and French houses count on the same ladder, whatever the forums say. Officine Creative heads its column IT/EU. VEJA and Margiela head theirs EU. One rung, one number, and a 38 in Milan is a 38 in Paris.

The UK column is where the houses stop agreeing. All four put a 38 at a UK 5. Three then run one UK size for every European size the whole way up; VEJA does not, going one for one from 35 through 41, a half step to the 42, then whole steps again. The two ladders are not the same length, and every chart hides it by rounding somewhere different.

Where a house tells you itself

VEJA is unusually plain about its own range: take the larger size if you are between two, order the Salar, the Rio Branco, the Dekkan and the running shoes a size larger, and order the sandals a size smaller. One house, four instructions, decided by the model rather than the label. (A house that publishes four exceptions to its own chart is being more honest than one that publishes none.)

Vagabond does it by material. Patent leather feels more fitted than supple leather, which softens and adapts with wear, and pointed toe shapes read small, which is why wide feet size up. Neither house publishes a blanket line about running large.

A chart converts one number into another number, and only a tape has ever touched a foot.

What a half size and a boot actually change

A half size is about a third of a centimetre. Officine Creative's men's ladder moves in half European sizes from a 39 to a 46, roughly 3 mm a rung, while Vagabond's band for one whole size runs 243 to 249 mm: the half size sits inside the tolerance a single size already carries. VEJA and Vagabond print none at all; the other two print them the whole way up.

A boot moves the arithmetic one way only. Blundstone states it flatly: leather stretches slightly across the instep and never lengthwise, because a reinforced toe holds the shape. Its half sizes do not add length either, they add leather over the foot, for a wide foot, a high instep or an orthotic. Leather gives across the girth. It does not give along the sole.

So a boot snug over the instep is a boot you keep, and a short boot is finished before you leave the shop. Blundstone asks for a quarter of an inch at the toe and a quarter to a half inch of heel slippage. Measure in the sock you will actually wear, not the cotton one you measured in. What the salt does after that is the winter boots piece.

Before you press buy

Write your millimetres down; your foot will change less over a year than the charts will. Open the house's own guide rather than the retailer's, and trust millimetres over the US column.

Read the listing for a model name, because VEJA's exceptions are model level and other houses bury theirs in the same place. Ask for the insole length of the pair in the box, in the size you want; a shop with the stock on the premises measures it while you wait, which a warehouse on another continent cannot. Read the return line before you pay, since final sale is ordinary in a small room, and how within works sets out whose policy governs. Here is the honest limit of it. Two of these four publish a number a ruler could check, the other two publish conversions of conversions, and not one knows your instep. Measuring gets you to two sizes. Standing on a floor in both decides it.
