New Year's Eve outfits 2026: what to wear and what it costs

One dress, and one shiny thing

The shiny thing is the whole plan, and the rest of the outfit can be boring. A black dress you can wear again in February, with one bright thing at the neck or the feet, beats a sequin dress you will wear once. If you want the shine in the dress itself, buy the LEJE, because CAD 129 is a low price for a night that ends at 2am.

Two black dresses are worth your money, and both are marked down. Coperni's twisted cut out jersey dress is CAD 269, down from CAD 595, and Avavav's Disa draped dress is CAD 599, down from CAD 1,075.

For print, Patou's Cutout Curve dress is a long sleeved midi with an open back, at CAD 499, down from CAD 1,795.

If the dress is going to ride in a work bag all day, buy pleats. Issey Miyake's Pleats Please dresses are sewn to shape first and pleated after, so the pleats do not crease.

The pleats first showed up in the women's collection of 1988, and Pleats Please has been its own line since spring and summer 1994. The Mellow Pleats dress in charcoal is CAD 970, and it is the one dress here I would pack without a second thought.

When a dress is not the plan

A shirt and trousers is the fastest change there is. Ellery's faux leather flares are CAD 319, down from CAD 1,295, and they do the shiny part for you. Put a satin shirt on top: Nina Ricci's pink silk satin shirt is CAD 599, down from CAD 1,225, with long ties at the sleeves.

Your coat gets looked at for ten minutes and then lives on a chair. Buy one light enough to carry. Canada Goose's Cypress hooded jacket in Silverbirch is CAD 795 at Due West, down from CAD 1,050.

Buy the one shiny thing first, then dress the rest around it.

What men wear on New Year's Eve

Men get off lightly: dark trousers, a mock neck and one good jacket. Les Deux's navy wool suit trousers are CAD 239 and Sunspel's black brushed mock neck is CAD 145. That makes the whole outfit CAD 384 at Due West on Queen Street West.

Sunspel has made T shirts and underwear in England since 1860, and a mock neck is the plain end of that.

If you want the jacket to do the work, Homme Plissé Issey Miyake's double breasted blazer in black is CAD 1,250 in size 4. Homme Plissé started in 2013 and its pleats do not crease, which matters when the jacket spends the evening on the back of a chair.
