Santa flips the switch on the tree at 6 pm on Thursday 12 November 2026, and the Toronto Christmas Market opens. It runs to Sunday 3 January 2027 at 55 Mill Street, under the name it goes by now, the Distillery Winter Village. The sun sets at 4:55 pm, so by then you are on cobblestones in the dark.

IN STOCK NOW

Timberland and Canada Goose, on the shelf.

The clock decides what you pay and what you wear. Entry is free before 4 pm, but from 4 pm Friday to Sunday General Admission costs $19.89 all in. I would take a free afternoon that runs into the dark over any Saturday ticket.

Get inside before 4 pm and the rest of the night is free, since you can stay as long as you like. Every rule here comes off the organiser's own pages, read 16 October 2026.

Quick facts

  • Dates: Thursday 12 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027
  • Free entry: before 4 pm every day, and all day Monday to Wednesday through 13 December
  • Tickets, all in: General Admission $19.89, Flex $22.37, Express $37.29, online only; kids 9 and under free
  • Dark and cold: sunset 4:55 pm on opening night; December normal low minus 2.7°C
  • On within: 45 pairs on the women's boots shelf and 26 on the men's boots shelf, every count read 16 October 2026

Free hours against ticketed nights

A Wednesday in November costs nothing at any hour. Retail runs 10 am to 9 pm and the vendor cabins 12 pm to 9 pm, so you can arrive at noon and stay well past sunset.

Tickets start at 4 pm every Friday to Sunday, every December Thursday and daily from 14 to 31 December. On Saturday 12 December you must be inside before 4 pm to stay free, with the line building from 3 pm and the sun setting at 4:41 pm. There are no in and out privileges, so dress as if you are staying.

General Admission is $16.00 plus a $1.60 service fee and $2.29 HST, for one date and entry time. Flex, at $22.37, moves to a later date up to two times, my pick for December, when a normal year brings 25.9 cm of snow. Express, at $37.29, skips the line at every gate, worth it to me only from 14 to 31 December, when every evening is ticketed.

The tree, the charity night and 47 Victorian buildings

Opening night needs a ticket, and all profits from opening night ticket sales go to the market's charity partners. That is the ticket I would buy first. The organiser calls the tree "Canada's most photographed Christmas tree", and Destination Toronto puts it at 55 feet, over an outdoor market of more than 65 merchants.

The district is the 47 restored Victorian buildings of the Gooderham and Worts Distillery, a national historic site. Its banner reads "Supporting local since 1832", though the district opened only in 2003.

In the district's Fermenting Cellar, the Immersive Nutcracker projects Tchaikovsky's 1892 Christmas Eve story across a 360 degree, floor to ceiling screen. Its castle entrance is on Gristmill Lane, and adults pay $19.99 plus a $2.00 service fee plus HST. In ticketed hours you need a Winter Village ticket too, so I would book it for a free afternoon.

For the walker on wet stone

The organiser's own phrase is "historic cobblestone streets", the site is pedestrian only, and a normal November brings 70.8 mm of precipitation. So start at the sole: grippy rubber for wet stone, and no thin heel.

My first pick is the Timberland fur lined boot at Utopia in wheat gold, $195, for the lining. Walking keeps feet warm; an hour standing still does not.

For black leather, the Stutterheim Patrol Boot at Due West is $225, and you can wear it to dinner after. At $1,995, the Guidi PL1V rubber sole boot at WDLT117 is a lot of boot for a line, though the sole is right for the stone.

For an hour in line at minus 2.7°C

Wear a parka past the hips for a December line: you stand still there, so the length does the work a walk would. At Due West, women get the Canada Goose Shelburne parka in military green for $1,495, and men the Mackage Graydon-Z parka in black for $1,450. My favourite is Utopia's black Canada Goose Erickson, worn before, at $800: a parka someone wore first is still a parka.

Gloves are the short shelf, 8 pieces on the women's gloves shelf and 9 on the men's gloves shelf, so buy those first. Pick a pair you can keep on for the photograph, like the COOR pleated leather gloves in black, $185 at Due West.

For that picture, wear colour near your face; Due West has the Herno wool beanie in burgundy for $155. The Toronto winter coat guide has the rest.

On a ticketed day, be inside the gates before 4 pm and dressed for the dark.

The shops on the same streets

Inside the district, Bergo Designs at 28 Tank House Lane is a designer concept store, open to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Gotstyle sells designer menswear from the 2nd floor of 21 Trinity St.

Dean Davidson, a jewellery designer at 145 Berkeley St, is closed Monday and Tuesday. (Go on a Wednesday before 14 December and the market is free too.) In Corktown, HAVEN Toronto is on floor 2 of 190 Richmond St E.

More are in the Distillery District shops in within's directory and the Corktown shops in within's directory.

Getting there without a car

Parking is extremely limited with construction nearby, so come by transit or a ride share. From Union, take Line 1 to King, then the 504A King streetcar east to Distillery Loop. Or ride the 121 bus from Front and Bay to Mill and Trinity, with extra service on Fridays from 4 pm and weekends from 11 am.

Walking from Union takes about 25 minutes. From Castle Frank, the 65 Parliament bus runs to Mill Street.

On a ticketed day, I would reach the main gate before 3 pm, since the organiser expects lines from then. Tickets are non refundable but transferable: forward the email or text to the friend who goes instead. I would make the same two choices, the hour and the sole, for any winter night out.
