within is an Explore page for the world's best boutiques, and everything on it is real.

You scroll photographs. You save what stops you. The difference is that every photograph is a garment hanging in a named shop, with a price and an address, and you can own it before you finish scrolling.

The scroll you already do

You find clothes on Instagram and Pinterest. A coat in somebody's photograph, a bag in a story, a shop in Paris whose grid you have been reading for a year. Then the trail goes cold. The account ships from a warehouse, or does not ship at all, or the piece was one of two and sold in 2023 to a woman who walked in on a Tuesday. Screenshots pile up in a folder nobody opens twice.

within is that folder, alive. The feed is built to be looked at rather than searched: big photographs, no sponsored rows, no reason to open twelve tabs. Save a piece and it stays saved because the shop still has it, and the hour the shop does not, it goes.

Explore Paris from New York

The boutiques worth knowing are local by design. A room on Rue de Charonne buys forty pieces a season and sells them to people who live four streets away. That is what makes it good, and it is also why you have never seen it.

within collapses the distance. From a couch in New York you can walk the shelves of that Paris room, save the jacket, and know it is hanging there tonight. In the other direction, the same feed tells you the shop six blocks from your office has the exact thing you were about to order from three time zones away, and that you can be wearing it at dinner.

Both readings are the product. One is discovery, the other is the errand you were going to run anyway, done properly.

Nothing here is a warehouse

Boutiques connect their own point of sale, Shopify or Square or Lightspeed, so the feed tracks the rack rather than a catalogue from last season. When a piece sells in the room it leaves the shelf online the same hour. No drop shipping, and no photograph of something that stopped existing a year ago.

Buying takes a couple of taps. Pieces sell at the boutique's own price on the boutique's own checkout. Pickup is free, and courier delivery is offered at cost where the shop supports it.

The bar

Every boutique on within is read and approved before it appears. Luxury boutiques, design studios and the vintage rooms with real buying, chosen on what is actually in the room: the buy, the makers behind it, how the shop treats a piece it cannot replace. Most shops that ask do not clear it.

A feed is only worth opening if somebody has already said no on your behalf.

Where within is

Toronto is open, and the cities in this journal follow as their best shops come on. A city opens once enough of its best shops are on the shelf, never before, because live inventory and same day collection only work where the marketplace knows the ground. The journal walks the streets ahead of the marketplace: Queen West, Ossington, Kensington Market, Yorkville, Leslieville.

Common questions

Is within free to use?

Yes. Shopping on within costs nothing extra. You pay the boutique's own price for the piece, and pickup is free. Local delivery, where offered, is charged at cost.

How is this different from Instagram or Pinterest?

Those are boards of pictures, and the picture is the end of the road. Every piece on within is attached to stock: a size, a price, a shop, a way to own it today. Save something here and you have saved an object rather than an image of one.

Which cities does within serve?

Toronto is on the shelves now, New York is next, and the list grows one city at a time. Boutiques anywhere in the world can request an invitation, and their shelves open to shoppers when their city does.

How is within different from Etsy or Amazon?

Etsy sells handmade and vintage goods shipped from anywhere. Amazon sells everything, out of warehouses. within sells what the best boutiques have in their actual rooms at this moment, which is why a piece can be in your hands the same afternoon and why it vanishes from the feed the minute somebody buys it in person.

What happens after I order?

The boutique gets your order and sets it aside. You collect it in store for free, usually the same day, or, where the shop offers delivery, a local courier brings it to you. Either way you are buying from the shop itself. within organizes the shelf.
