What to buy in Italy: the leather worth carrying home

On the one boot we priced both ways, the euro tag came out about the same as the Canadian one. The tax refund can move that number by up to about 18 percent of the price, but only if the shop does the paperwork.

Boots and shoes first

The tannery Conceria Guidi Rosellini was founded in 1896 in Pescia, Tuscany. Guidi's own site listed the 310 front zip boot at 1,240 euros and the 788Z back zip mid boot at 1,365 euros in September 2026.

At the Bank of Canada rate of 6 November 2026, 1,240 euros is about CAD 1,951. At WDLT117 on 7 St Thomas Street in Toronto, the Guidi 310 boot in black is CAD 1,900 in size 36. So the euro tag is not cheaper by itself.

The Guidi 788Z boot in white is CAD 2,100 in sizes 36 to 39, and 1,365 euros is about CAD 2,147. The same shop has the Guidi PL2 boot in kiwi at CAD 899, in sizes 36 to 38. Read our Guidi sizing note before you buy, because the size decides whether a boot is a bargain.

Clothes made in Italy, by the label on the shelf

The Made in Italy page has 356 items, and 53 of them are shoes. At Due West on 431 Queen Street West in Toronto, Emanuele Bicocchi has 45 items from CAD 175 to CAD 895. The silver Reissue Notre Cross hoop earring is the CAD 175 one.

Herno has 18 items there from CAD 155 to CAD 2,245, with a median of CAD 1,325. C.P. Company for men has 21 items from CAD 165 to CAD 3,580.

Before you pay Milan prices, check the resale ones. Utopia in Yorkville has 18 Prada items from CAD 200 to CAD 1,500, such as the Prada nylon travel pants in grey, pre owned, at CAD 200. It also has 8 items from Bottega Veneta, founded in Vicenza in 1966, from CAD 200 to CAD 1,300.

A flight does not turn an expensive boot into a bargain.

The tax refund, in plain numbers

To get the tax back, each invoice must be more than 70 euros. Until 31 January 2024 it was 154.94 euros.

Italy's tax is 22 percent and it is already inside the price, so a 1,000 euro bag holds 180.33 euros of tax. That makes about 18 percent of the price the most you can get back, before fees. Our note on tax free shopping in Europe has the steps.

Bring your passport to the till, because the invoice must be electronic and carry your passport details. It is stamped through the OTELLO system when you leave.
