Chrome Hearts hat: pay for the patch, not the city

A Chrome Hearts hat asks CAD 600 to 6,000 on resale, and the price doubles for leather crosses, pony hair or cashmere, not for a city on the front.

A Chrome Hearts hat costs CAD 600 to 6,000, median CAD 1,200, across 84 that ship worldwide from Canada. That is a wide spread for a cap. What moves it is what is sewn on.

Olise, the Bayern player, wore the proof to Oktoberfest. A post on X on 22 September called his hat a "Blue & Purple Cross Patch Cashmere Beanie", "reportedly worth up to €3,500 on the secondary market." The price is in the name: cross patch, cashmere.

So pay for what is sewn onto a Chrome Hearts hat, not the logo or the city on the front. A city name is only thread; leather crosses, pony hair and cashmere are material, and the asks follow material. A collector who pays for the rare city will disagree, and that is fair.

The Hollywood trucker is thread, priced like it

In July 2020, Complex named trucker hats "emblazoned with gothic fonts" one of the brand's two most recognizable items. Off-White's 2015 capsule with the brand was T shirts and trucker hats. This is the hat people mean.

The work on the plain ones is thread and cloth. The shop's own titles say so: Embroidered CH Logo, Vine Dagger Denim, Nylon Dagger Vine. So the 13 Hollywood truckers with no patch stay at CAD 600 to 1,300, and the seven embroidered logo beanies at CAD 800 to 1,000.

Start with the CH Hollywood Trucker in black on black at CAD 1,000, or the Small Brim at CAD 900. Black goes with every jacket you own. Only two hats carry a real size, the Love You Fitted Caps, red in 7 3/8 and blue in 7 1/2, at CAD 1,500 each.

The city trucker against the plain one

The city hats follow the stores. Two years after the founders split in 1994, the first flagship opened in New York, and WWD counted St Barths, due on 7 December 2019, as the 32nd. Complex says each store "offers its own unique look and products", and WWD adds "custom handmade furniture and hardware, down to every hinge and handle."

Buying at the source in Paris means booking a time at 18 Avenue Montaigne. The stores on Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu and Cross Creek Road in Malibu are by appointment too. On resale, the Paris Exclusive Trucker is CAD 1,200, Honolulu's is CAD 1,000 and a pre owned Malibu is CAD 700.

Las Vegas has three stores and New York two, and both city truckers ask CAD 1,000, the same as a plain Hollywood trucker in black. Miami's is CAD 1,000 as well. Its store, the brand's page says today, is temporarily closed.

The cross patch is where the price doubles

The cross came early. In August 1992 the Chicago Tribune opened on a black quilted leather motorcycle jacket "with sterling silver closures and a few crosses appliquéd here and there." By July 2020, Complex was writing about $1,750 denim "adorned with leather crosses", in US dollars.

On hats, the 16 whose titles name a patch, pony hair or cashmere ask CAD 1,500 to 6,000, median CAD 2,000. Olise's beanie belongs here. At the top sits the Triple Cross Patch Cashmere Beanie in black, at CAD 6,000.

The Big Daddy Cashmere Beanie is CAD 2,000, and the New York City Exclusive Big Daddy Beanie asks exactly the same. In white, the Triple Cross Patch Pony Hair trucker is the gentler way in, at CAD 1,500 (there are two, if a friend wants to match). Multi Patch truckers run CAD 1,800 to 3,500.

St Barths is the one place a city and a patch meet. Its two cross patch exclusives, red and orange, ask CAD 2,500 each. The patch did that, not the island.

Honolulu on the front costs nothing extra. Cashmere costs double, at least.

Leather and silver are where it began

Richard Stark and John Bowman started the business in a Los Angeles garage in 1988, Bowman making leather goods and Stark selling top grade raw leathers. The jeweller Leonard Kamhout joined soon after. He used "only sterling silver for buttons, grommets, snaps, buckles", the Tribune reported in 1992.

Stark told the paper why: "We both rode bikes. We couldn't find jackets we really liked. So we made our own."

The same article noted that "there's nothing made of chrome and none of their decorative symbols are hearts." Leather and silver did make it onto a few hats. The Spiderweb Silver Cross Gunslinger Belt Leather Hat in black, lightly pre owned, asks CAD 6,000, and the Chomper Leather Gunslinger Strapback is CAD 1,400.

In 1992, a Chrome Hearts belt already cost $825 to $1,900, in US dollars.

Before you pay for one

There is no retail price to check first. Chrome Hearts' own online shop sells Baccarat, scents, underwear and socks, and no hats. Resale is the only price you will see.

Size is the easy part. Of the 84 on the Chrome Hearts hats shelf, 82 are one size, so judge the brim and the crown in the photos, not a number.

The grade is the harder part, and it does not work the way you would guess. Graded hats, 23 of them, have a median of CAD 1,000. Those with no grade, 61 of them, sit higher at CAD 1,300.

No grade is not the same as new. One Vine Dagger Denim Baseball Hat asks CAD 1,300 with no grade; another is CAD 1,000 lightly used. A King Taco trucker in black goes for CAD 700 pre owned and CAD 1,000 lightly used, so read the word before the number.

Pre owned pieces are photographed to show every flaw, by the shop's own account, so open every picture. Every sale at Utopia is final, and its policy page says to check the size and colour option before checkout. The shop's own promise reads: "All products sold are 100% authentic."

International orders take 7 to 10 business days, with tracking, and pickup is at 132 Cumberland Street in Toronto. Last week a reader on X asked everyone to pack up the fake caps. For that, read how to spot fake Chrome Hearts.

Ask what is on a piece before you ask the price, and ask it again about what Chrome Hearts rings cost.

Common questions

How much is a Chrome Hearts hat?

Expect CAD 600 to 6,000 on resale, with a median of CAD 1,200 across 84 hats that ship worldwide. Chrome Hearts publishes no retail price for hats and sells none online. For the stores and the rest of the range, see where to buy Chrome Hearts.

Why are Chrome Hearts hats so expensive?

It comes down to scarcity and material. None of the brand's 36 locations is in Canada, and a patch, pony hair or cashmere puts the median at CAD 2,000. A reader on X said on 20 September that people wear it only for the price; why Chrome Hearts is so expensive gives that a fair answer.

Where are Chrome Hearts hats made?

The brand does not say. WWD in 2019 and Complex in 2020 described eight factories on its Hollywood campus, 13 buildings over three blocks, making apparel and accessories among other things.

Every business above is independent, was verified open as of August 2026, and nobody paid to be here. If one has closed or moved, tell us at hello@shopwithin.co and we will fix it.
